Default jumpy speedo on auto 94 hatch

just recently i noticed the speedo not moving when going up tp 30 mph then suddenly jumping up tp about 60 when going 40 and like a 100 when going 60...

coincidentally this started happening on my way to have my headgasket, water pump, timing belt, t-stat, replaced this past saturday...

i searched the threads and see most say to check the connection at the vss, is this in the same location as the manual tranny, or can it be another possible problem being its an auto...
thanks

if you have aftermarket EL-guages layed over you cluster there may be friction between the needle causing it to not move continuously. It also may just be stuck, for some other reason physically.

the circuit that runs the speedo is shot. its the circuit board right behind the speedo guage inside the cluster.

no rice gauges

and what if its just a bad connection , or dirty/corroded connection at the vss, how can u be so sure its a bad cluster?

best thing to do is borrow a working cluster and plug it in. I've fixed numerous speedos with the same problem and its always been the circuit board. hope this helps.

ok, is the cluster as easy to remove as it is in an integra ? or does the dash have to come out in the eg hatch to get the cluster out?

it's the main symptom that your VSS is about to go out...

it isn't too difficult. You need to unscrew a few screws (i think 3). Then pop the bezel dash piece out. It takes up a large area of the dash. Then you will remove the 4 screws that hold in the cluster. I hope I'm not missing anything but you get the gist. Just make sure you get out all the screws before you start prying the clips out.

When you do get it out. I'd lightly move the needle through the range of different mph with my finger. If it feel unobstructed, it probably due to some other electrical problem. Try replacing the cluster if possible.

If it acts up again, check you distributor it started to do that in my hatch at first when i did a b16 swap the MPH started jumping around when ever it wanted too. The RPM Gauge starts joining the MPH gauge in the jumping . Then jumping will be followed by your car stumbling and shutting off. A worn Coil will do that to you.

the grounds in your engine bay. there's one on the tranny, one on the thermostat housing, one on the power steering pump, and there might be a few others in there i'm not sure.
