well i decided i dont like to pay for jdm type x slasher parts to make my car fast, so i fab everything myself. the latest adventure was this catch can,

7 inch piece of 3 inch pvc piping
2 end caps
3 1/2 inch barbed fittings
2 fittings for the clear sight tube
3 inch piece of clear tubing for sight window
a petcock
a piece of steel wool for the oil droplets to catch on
and a filter.

WHat is the point of that external tube? just to show the level?
I personally must either be a shitload smarter..
I would use a Propane tank *empty one!* and just cut the top and add your filter, then drill and tap your side tube.
Cheaper option than what you have used

, but thanx for the laugh
not bad on the catch can, as far as tapping a propane tank...be careful not to blow your face off.

very nice, but do you worry about the steel wool breaking down over time and possibly getting into the engine? What about using one of those shower thingys that chics use instead of a wash cloth.... you know what i'm talkin bout? Would that possibly work better?

How will it get back into the engine? The oil that ends up in the catch can is captured from vapors. It remains in the catch can until you decide to empty it. It's usually pretty nasty and shouldn't be poured back into the engine.

Some of us use a line to the intake pipe off the catch can instead of a breather filter to help pull from the valve cover and PCV into the catch can (so, pcv/valve cover->catch can->intake pipe), so if the steel wool breaks down it could get sucked in the intake. I've never heard of it being a problem before, although it is a good question.

thats why i asked.....thats how i've always seen a catch can hooked up. What is the other way?

You just put a filter on the sucking side, like in the pic at the top of this thread. In theory, the crackcase and valvecover will have positive pressure (the whole point of needing to release them). And the positive pressure should be enough to get the fluids to the catch can on their own without the aid of the other side having suction. The filter just lets the catch can breath without filling with crap.
Hey guys,
I had a question for you HMT catch can guys. Did anyone use a baffling system other then steel wool? my Moroso catch can had a plate at the top with 2 louvers on the plate to let air through. I was thinking about doing a baffle setup similar to this instead of the steel wool.
Also how many of you guys used a filter with a large diameter neck instead of a filter with a small diameter neck? (similar in size to the ones you stick on your valve cover.

I wanted to bring this up one more time,
Do you guys think it would be a good idea to use a valve cover breather with a small neck? like the ones you see people putting on their valve cover nipple (5/16" dia?). I was thinking about getting a container and having my local machine shop drill and tap the sides for the ports behind the engine and drill and tap the top and stick another barbed fitting there and attaching my breather filter there.
what do you guys think?
