Default speedometer needle is acting wierd

my needle keeps on jumping up and down when im driving on it normally, and then just sometimes stays down and doesnt move at all. this has never done this before and just started doing this all of a sudden. my other gauges work fine, is this a wiring problem, or a fuse, or do i just need a new gauge cluster? if i need a new gauge cluster which kinds can i put that will fit in my 92 hatch

A little more info might help.

Is your speedo electronic or mechanical?

What kind of car is it?

What kind of cluster is it?

It's a good symptom that your speed sensor is about to go out...

on the backside of the transmission, next to the firewall.
it goes in the hole to the right of part number 12:

check that plug is not corroded or dirty.make sure the pins haven't backed out of the plug.make sure the plug is fully connected to the sensor.make sure the sensor is fully seated into the tranny.

^^ correct. my speedo was doing the same thing but no cel, replaced vss, checked wires, fuses, etc. did nothing so i just replaced the cluster and viola. a good tip on fifuring out if you need a new cluster is remove the cluster and check the needle. if there is no resistance then you need a new cluster

you don't have the aftermarket gauge face overlays do you? i've heard of these hanging up the needles.

Ive got a 95 Civic DX and it did the exaxct same thing as ur talkin. I went to my mechanic and we took a test drive hooked up to a scan tool, and the signal was great. So the next day went to the junkyard and ordered a new cluster and boom worked like brand new.
