Since I've never ridden, and would kind of like to understand better, the way the reporter crashed his bike, what caused that? Obviously it was purposely induced there, but in a non-staged scenario, what would cause the front wheel to pull over like that, besides operator error?

Nothing. He locked up the front wheel like a jackass and didn't release it.

Yep, I've locked up the front a few times. Immediately release some pressure on brake lever and you're fine. I guess the reporter rider guy thought it was like a car where you could just skid all the way to a stop.

Ben should have one of his teamates (at full speed) tackle him without a football helmet and have him experience how FUN it is for his HEAD to bounce off the GRASS field and then maybe he'll think about wearing a helmet. Hes gonna have a major concussion when his head bounces off the road...
