painting side mouldings?
i know this should probably go in the appearance forum, but my question is about crx specific mouldings. my car goes in for paint next week and i really like the look of the side mouldings painted to match. but the body shop tells me that because they are rubber mouldings that the paint is probably just going to flake off. does anyone else have any first hand experience with their side mouldings being painted? let me know how yours have held up

Take it to your local body shop.

Side moldings... who needs em. I took mine off and used fiberglass and bondo. Covered the holes right up. I only did it becuase when i bought the car is didnt have the moldings on the z3 fenders the guy put on ( u know so it could breathe underwater ). It didnt look right at all so i just said f*ck it and took em off. I kinda like that look a tad bit better. But thats just my view.

Is adhesion promotor applied directly to the plastic, or added in the paint? What if the moldings are already painted (painted right) what needs to be done to paint over them (for a color change)?
no i just don't do bondo and all that ****, i'm just not good with body work. therefore bondo is going to cost me more than someone as cool as you

Umm yes. They're dumbasses if they can't paint mouldings. Every competant body shop can and will.

there are three parts to this. before adhesion is even applied a special cleaner is applied which is part 1 of the adhesion promotor system. once moldings are cleaned adhesion promotor is sprayed on. after proper flash time moldings are then coated with a flex primer.
Adhesion promoter wont do you any good if you still dont prep it right.
Plastic flexes/expands,
think of what happens when the weather changes from cold to hot, vice versa.
Easy way:
-Wash/Clean part thoroughly
-Wet Sand with 400grit.
-Adhesion Promoter
-Paint
Right way:
-Wash/Clean part thoroughly
-Wet Sand with 400.
-Adhesion Promoter
-Primer
-Wet Sand with 400 or 500 grit.
-Clean with water
-Paint.
All the mouldings/sideskirts/lips/bumpers i've done at the shop i work at still remains on customer cars.. at least for the ones ive seen over a 2 year period.
Good luck.
