Default car won't start after swap

i have a 88 crx si and the a6 took a **** on itself. i had a short block in my garage that was waiting to be put together so i put that in. z6 block and head converted to obd1. go to crank and she won't start. it just tries to start but won't fire, and i can smell gas. so i'm guessing it's something in the ignition but don't know what. everything is looks to be hooked up right and my timing is straight. any suggestions are appreciated.

can carb spray foul out spark plugs?

pull up a plug and set it back down gently with out popping it on and then try and crank your car listen for the spark arching, helps to have a friend.

that sounds pretty dangerous, what if it ignites fuel in the chamber right below it and the plug isn't screwed in.......

Had the same problem on the same swap.

Found that when I put everything in I was just attaching stuff as I was going, making sure that the right stuff was attached at the right place. Anyways, one ground wire (IRC to the tranny or block on the right side) was not tightened down (not was but on loosely). Tightened, boom, started and ran fine since.

Check all grounbs, doesn't seem like it should make a difference, but it does.

ok, some progress has been made. timing is fucked up some how on the dizzy side, everything is aligned on the drivebelt side. messed around w/ the dizzy and when it's moved all the back it fires but won't start running. when i move it forward it doesn't fire at all. so what do y'all think it is?

It sounds like your wiring (ignition). Did you use a jumper or did u do the conversion yourself?

got it running, but it won't hold idle. it sits at about 1600 w/ the throttle cable tightened up a bit w/ about a 2mm gap between those 2 pieces where the throttle cable attaches. i can't adjust my idle screw bc the guy who had it before me put what looks like super glue around the screw, so that's why i use the throttle cable. when i loosen the cable to try and get the idle down to around 1000, it bogs down and cuts off if i go below 1600. i think it's something to do w/ either vaccum, timing or fuel. i know that's a wide area but i was hoping y'all could help me narrow it down. any suggestions welcome.
