We will not see a Civic Type R ever in America. Why? Because Honda is desperately trying to separate Honda and Acura as much as possible. The whole TYPE something is an Acura thing. However, Si and SI-R's are Honda designations.
A RSX type R would be perfect though. Acura is going for the sporty luxury look. Just look at how they designate the RSX, TL, and CL as type S's andnote the new 6 speeds in the RSX and the CL type S. So use the RSX as a niche car to show off the technology and the direction that Acura is heading toward. From a marketing standpoint, using the S2000 would have been good here, but it would be sacreligious because it was to commemorate 50 years of Honda. It would be kinda like a Saturn Corvette or a Lincoln Mustang. However, it would give the image that Acura wants, giving it 2 sports cars, while commanding a high price on the market with a few more amenities of course.
As usual, I expect the RSX type R to be detuned and gutted however. If Acura knows what it is doing, it would bring it over as is from JDM. I mean everything from 2003 Mustang Cobras to STi's will have Brembo brakes! Also, even if they bring it, it may not be the hit that the DC-2 ITR was because now the RX-8, Z, WRX STi, and Lancer will all be only a few thousand north of the type R. Honda may have missed the boat here.
Sorry for my long post. Just my opinion.

this is really stupid but I always thought the dc5r should be brought to america as the honda integra. Since the quelude is gone, honda has nothing performance wise between the si and the s2k.
whatever they call it, I would have a tough choice if they brought dc5r and ctr here. I guess I would wait a year or two and see which I could get low milage cheap from somone selling it to get the next flash in the pan car.
