Not sure if I should have posted this in cosmetics or FI or DR but here it goes. I was wondering if anyone uses some sort of screen in front of their intercooler while driving on the street/hwy to prevent stones and other debris from hitting your i/c?

My uncle uses a black tight woven mesh fabric for in front of his radiator on his 56' chevy (show car) to prevent bugs from hitting the fan on the other side, but would this work w/ an i/c when air flow is a must?

use nylon, like from womens panty hose. its cheap, lets air go through, and makes your intercooler stealth so no one will know you have a turbo

 

Anyone have any first hand w/ this type of thing? Pics would be very useful

 

I'd like to know, too. I really don't like the grillcraft inserts that are pushed in from the front, but there are people on Ebay selling sheets that you cut yourself. I was thinking about getting some in black and securing it to the back of the stock grill so it isn't as noticeable or ricey, but I haven't seen any pictures of anyone doing this. Another thing to consider is how much this will disturb the air flow if the mesh is too fine.

it shouldn't disturb any air flow.. its wise to have when running front mount, protection from larger objects so it last longer just like running filter for turbo. most shops/performance/cosmetic type places will sell mesh that you can cut out yourself, grill inserts just don't look right because of border. don't forged hardware stores like home depot, just pick whatever you like the looks of

 

I don't know about that gutter screen painted black because if a rock hits it, there is room for the little stone to go through and if it does hit the mesh, your screen will soon look spoted and not clean......

What, you think pantyhose are going to stop little rocks? Anything small enough to fit through those holes isn't going to do any noticeable damage to your cooler. That's about as good as it gets in terms of IC protection while still allowing adequate flow.

 

your main concern would be against large debree, small isn't going to do much damage.. look at your radiator.. its still running.. this isn't to offer complete protection, just better than nothing

And you can also get them in a variety of colors...there was a guy here on honda-tech that did that to his intercooler. Looked really stealth.

I've read alot of threads on intercooler protection where people mention using ladies panty hoses. With you wanting it to stop rocks from damaging you IC I dont think its a really good idea, panty hose sure may help with the likes of bugs and dual layering of them can make your IC look "stealth" though but with rocks I think its too "soft" to stop them.

bent it over the edges and used epoxy glue. thats it. holds real good. even "gooder" if you sand up the plastic a bit

 

we have been using black screen door screen. Pulled tight it makes a decent barrier and stealthy at the same time!

Thanks. I ordered some black plastic mesh off of Ebay. I don't know what the quality is like, but we'll see.

Thats a good idea, black plastic screen instead of the metal stuff. That way the color would not change after some use and its not real weak like panty hose.

 

That plastic screen is what my uncle uses and I think I will use

 

panty hose will just make the intercooler so sexy but i think it'll just rip or tear when something bigger than an inch comes flying at it.
