Default Welding up exhaust, do you guys like to start rom the front or the back?

Hi guys,

I just recieved my Kteller 3" SS CRX piping kit and Apexi N1 muffler today. I have the exhaust layed out and stuff, but when I come around to welding it up which way should I go? What I mean is do you guys find it easier to start with welding the muffler into place first or do you start at the cat and work your way back? or is it just a matter of preference?

I kinda want to have the N1 coming off the the side and upwards a little. I'm gonna lay out the Invidia and use it as a reference. Then to get the angle of the muffler just right I'm gonna tilt it to where I want it. Then there will be a 90 degree elbow coming right out of the back of it. Then on the other end of the elbow I'm gonna trim it down until the end of it is angled just right to where it will butt up against the center pipe in the rear part of the exhaust.

what do you guys think?
Thanks

front to back. Think about which end is the most important to be aligned correct.. then you should have an obvious answer.

yah that's true...I thought since it was the Kteller piping kit made for the CRX then it wouldn't matter either way. I guess I'll do it front to back, or maybe start at the front and back and meet in the middle or something, hehehe.

only problem with that is that if you meet in the middle, and find out it's not exact you are going to have to fight with it, which is NOT fun. I know this from tacking a section into a friend's car. I'd recommend going from front to back, working out the placement as you go. At least that way if you get to the back and have issues you can work them out alot easier than trying to fight with the middle.

pull off your stock one, use small tack welds to get the hangers on, place it up on the car and adjust anything you need to go from there.

FRONT TO BACK!!!!

never meet in the middle...its a place like hell you dont ever want to go.

going back to front is the same as meeting in the middle...because you're meeting at teh turbo.....or at the end of the header...same ****. HUGE headache. Jsut start at teh front and work back. tack everything up first...then weld. I usually tack in 3 spots. measure twice cut once...kinda thing. take your time.

Thanks for the input so far guys

The only reason I even thought about doing back to front or "meeting in the middle" is cause I have that 18" resonator that I have to weld in. So I'll have to cut out a chunk of pipe anyways and stick this resonator in it's place. This right here is where I would have adjusted the final length of the entire exhaust, from DP to muffler. I'll most definately start off with the DP and DT first, then see how it goes from there.

One other question too. When you guys welded up your first exhaust, how long did it take you? I'm gonna be doing this with my new Hobart Handler 140, and I'll probably MIG it. I thought about using just the flux core, but I remember now why got rid of that HF 90 amp flux core welder, hehehe.

Thanks

get the system on the car first, then go and cut and weld in the resonator.. this way you dont put it in a hanger or odd spot that will require more time.

depending on your welding skills shouldnt take you but 2 hours maybe

You look like you have more room under you rex than i do. I don't necessarily have a real N-1 exhaust, but I don't think I could fit it under the bumper with that layout. How long is the muffler you are using?

It's just an Apexi N1 turbo muffler. 6.5" diameter for the main canister which is 14" long. The tip is about 5" dia and 5" long. There is about 6" op piping coming out the back of the muffler which I could trim down a bit.
