Default I crashed my R!

Man, I never thought it would happen to me, but it did. I was on my way home from work. I was driving around 70 mph on the highway. I was on the far left inside lane, next to the wall. Then all of a sudden, this Grand Am changes lanes into mine, I quickly reacted, and swerved right towards the wall. Then I thought to myself, "Do I want to hit the wall and die, or do I want to hit the Grand Am?", so I swerved back to my right to hit the Grand Am. Then I looked in my rearview, and saw him do a 360, and smack into the wall. The police came, and so did some of my friends, filed a accident report, and said it was his fault. His car is totaled, and mine is messed up. There is no frame damage, but I'm going to need a new fender, passenger door, and my rear quater panel needs a little work done to it. He was some Polish guy around 50 years old, and he has some cheap insurance. He was trying to make it seem like it was my fault, saying I was speeding. He was speeding as well, because he was right next to me. I've always pride myself on being a safe driver, but I learned something tonight, I can be the safest driver on the road, but that doesn't mean the person driving next to me is. He just changed lanes without looking, and now I'm probably going to be carless for a couple weeks.

yeah, big daddy K was there. I get this call from Will ( ITR2k ) and he says he got into a car accident. My face flushed white when i heard and at the time i was at my friends house lookin around for cheap JDM conversions and we all jet out the door to go see if he was okay. Scared like a mo fo, i got stuck in the snow over here. We got out there and i guess the scene was okay. I saw the tow truck driver and he asked a few questions about the yellow r ( mine ) and he admitted that the Yellow one was the way to go ( sorry, had to acknowledge that because one of my other friends is soon to pick up an R but he just can't make up his mind ). Well, i just wanted to comment on todays incident and to say that I am glad that Will is okay and as a general reminder, Drive safely and be cautions of other " retarded " drivers because no matter how good of a driver you are, you can't always say the same for the other driver next to you.

Why didn't you use your brakes to slow down? The ITR can stop on a dime. But anyways life is a learning experience. Cheers!

Excellent point. This is why I sold my zx-9r 2 years ago. Some yuppie in his mercedes wagon was throwing stuff at me while on freeway because he tried to merge into my lane w/o seeing me. Naturally, I made him merge behind me. He followed me off the freeway, we got stopped at a traffic light, and he got out and started punching me while I was sitting there, on my bike. Cops got him 10 minutes later...can't beat a motorola!!

That's kind of what I was thinking...but then again if he was going 70+ through a turn, then I could understand.

Sorry to hear man. I hope everything works out for you.

That's funny you said that. Last night, I was driving on a 2 lane onramp, you know, the circle ones, not going to fast, but definately not slow, and my tires were a touch cold. Anyway a big, ugly, pos mall assault suv cut me off pretty bad, and I had to get on the brakes just enough to get the *** really light....I caught it before I the back got infront of the front, but it was still hairball.

Glad to hear your ok man. It sounds evil of me but you might as well take him down with you otherwise you'll be out of luck claiming to insurance that someone else went into your lane.

It would have been useless if I used my brakes. We were neck to neck, for about 30 seconds, then he abruptly changed lanes into mine. If I would of broke, he would of hit my front end, and send the front of my car flying towards the wall. If I would of drop it in 3rd and floored it, he would of hit my rear, causing me to spin out in the middle of a busy highway. There was absolutly nothing I could do about it, on one side I had a wall, and the other I had a dumb driver. I think I did the right thing, by swerving back into him, because if I didn't, it would of been me crashing into the wall, instead of him. Anyways, today is Monday, and I have to take the R to the body shop, and go take care of everything with insurance. I'll post pics of my accident when I have a chance.

That whole things sucks, but look at what happened. You evalutated the situation and made a choice. In this case, it was probably a very good one, from the insurance perspective. If you would have chosen the wall, he may have driven off and then you have a solo accident with a phantom Grand Am.

IMO I think you probably are a safe driver, because of the simple fact you could process the informaton fast enough to make the decision. Don't second guess what you did or didn't do. It happened, everybodies ok, and insurance will cover the repairs.

Good luck.

Ouch....that's the reason I never drive at one's blind angle. Neither I slow down or speed up to get out of his/her blind views, any fast moving headlights weaving in and out of traffic = my foot on the brakes and get ready for him to cut me and brake.

I agree, good decision on hiting the Grand Am vs the wall. The guy in the Grand Am most likely wouldnt have stopped, hell he might not even noticed what happened and that it was his fault.

Sure does. You have to drive for everyone around you as well in order to get through the day, but I'm sure it's like that all over the place.

Sorry to hear about the accident.
