question about koni reds paired with omni sleeves

Default question about koni reds paired with omni sleeves

i was wondering what yall recommend i set the reds to with using the omni sleeves (8k/6k). i didnt adjust the shocks when installing them, so i dont know what theyre at right now, but the car seems to bottom out a lot due to under damping. should i set the shocks to full stiff?

a) the springs are way underdamped. at least in the front. the rears are probably underdamped too, but 8kg's is too much for the reds. it probably means you've got a fair amount of bounce?

b) by bottoming out do you mean hitting the bumpstops? i.e. the springs compress and all of a sudden you get a jolt? means the car is too low and the shock doesn't have enough travel. again, i don't know how much drop reds can handle, but it's probably not much.

i think you need new shocks that are compatible with your spring rates and desired ride height, like koni yellows. i wouldn't trust AGX's on 8kg, illuminas might be ok. i guess if you want to make it work with the reds until they blow, set the shocks stiffer and pray for the best.

yeah i get a decent amount of bounce at times. i deff know at whatever the shocks are set to it cant really handle the rates because i keep bouncing instead of the shocks rebounding properly. yeah, by bottoming out i mean hitting the bumpstops. maybe i just need some springs are that more street friendly.

Since the red shocks start at a somewhat lower initial baseline at the minimum setting and then go up from there. For Hondas, the red Specials aren't that much softer than the yellow Sports and with the very wide adjustment range they are still quite capable. I think if you were to adjust the shocks to about 1.5 or so turns from minimum then you should be in the right basic ballpark for damping.

The shock valving will have nothing really to do with the car hitting the bump stops, this is simply saying that your car is too low for the spring rate that you have and the roads you are driving on. To a degree you can trim the bump stops a bit and get a little more free stroke however it increases the chances of internal bottoming in a big hit. Remember that the Koni red shock adjuster can be internally bottomed and damaged easier than teh Sport if you have insifficent bump rubber or ride height. By definition to make the internal adjuster mechanism work by bottoming and engaging the adjuster when off the car, then whacking something on the road and not having enough heights, rate or bump rubber will defintately cause internal damage.

I think if you adjust the shock valving much higher and review your height and bump rubber situation, you will find that the car can be pretty good and much better than currently and you not have to spend another dollar.

thanks very much for the reply lee. at this point my car isnt that low at all really, just about a two finger gap all around. i think stiffening the shocks and cutting down the stock bump stops a bit should do the job. thats pretty interesting to know the reds arent that much softer than the yellows. thanks again.
