Default expo 5: those flying, what's the closest airport?

sorry if this is already on the official expo 5 website...

itrbroham and i are planning to fly out to expo 5 (mikehonda on the ground w/ da race kaa) this year and are wondering if anyone has a recommendation on the nearest airport to the track. according to mid america motorplex's site, it's only 20 mins. from downtown omaha, nebraska.

any help would be appreciated.

kepani-who hopes to go to his first expo and meet some new faces.

Omaha's commercial airport, which is called Eppley Airfield, is closest, assuming you're flying on the airlines*. City code is OMA. Southwest Airlines flies there so check out their website for Southwest's discount fares, in addition to the travel agency websites like Orbitz, Travelocity, Expedia, etc. (Most travel agency websites do not show Southwest flights.)

You can fly non-stop from the cities shown in red on this map:

*For those flying in private planes, Plattsmouth Municipal Airport in Plattsmouth, Nebraska (PMV) is closest.

If you're considering flying to Chicago, here are a few tips.

When looking up fares, check flights to both O'Hare (ORD) and Midway (MDW). Both are close to the city; O'Hare has more flights but Midway's are often cheaper. Some websites let you check flights from both airports by using CHI as the city code instead of ORD or MDW.

And again, don't forget to check Southwest, which has the most flights to Midway.

wow, thanks for the offers guys! ht is blessed with so many cool people! we'll see how everything pans out. thanks ken for the map and links - noticed you're a pictures kinda guy. i've so far figured the OMA airport too.

most likely we'll get a ride from the aeroporto from mike, but if plans do not coincide, we'll likely take one of you guys up on the offer.

kepani-who's looking forward to putting faces and the "wild avatars" together. ...haha...

Not true, except maybe for folks in the northern suburbs, for whom O'Hare is closer. But Midway is actually very convenient to many, many Chicagoans. And it's pretty nice since they remodeled it.

It's also closer to downtown Chicago...

I live in Omaha. Let me know if you need any specific info about our airport (Eppley) or it's relation to where your hotel will be.

Of course it's not. It's about 15 minutes drive from downtown Chicago. It's easier to get through (without the crowds and long distances to walk of O'Hare). And there are lots of discount fares there.

That's why so many people are traveling through Midway. Last year it handled 20 million passengers - more than Tampa International (19 million), and almost as many as LaGuardia (24 million) or Seattle-Tacoma (27 million).

I bet all the people complaining about it have never even been there since they built the new terminal...

One counterpoint, Midway sucks for no highway access. But yeah, it is a very nice airport nowadays, pretty consistently cheaper than OHare. I had no idea it was nearly as busy as LaGuardia.

I'm equidistant between OHare and Mitchell Airport. I'd rather fly Mitchell over the other two any day of the week, assuming it's cost competitive.

Of course, my wife occasionally takes the corporate jet from Palwaukee Airport, AND parks at the hanger, which I can't beat.

Chris, who's marriage includes a wife that wears the pants.

It's only about five minutes from the Cicero Ave interchange with the Stevenson. And that commercial stretch on Cicero has come up over the years; you go by the biggest Starbuck's I've ever seen. But I hear you, it's not as convenient as O'Hare, which they built all the expressways afterwards so they go directly there.

Yes, a smaller airport like Midway or Mitchell (Milwaukee) usually means less time getting in and out, lower costs for parking, etc. For most of us in the Chicago area, though, Milwaukee is a hike. Oh, and it only has about a third as many flights as Midway; Mitchell had 6.7 million passengers last year.

Yes, but hecklervtec can beat that. He works at Kenosha Airport, and he flies from work. (In fact, he flies AS his work.)

For that matter, I can beat that, too; I can rent a plane and fly you out of Waukegan Airport...

What kind of lap times would a rental Cessna get at MAM? Can I co-drive?

Nevermind you're not going to be there. I'll have to rent one myself. Any ideas where to get a forged pilot's license?

(yes I'm kidding around)
