I think you may just be lugging your engine. Why are you letting the RPMs drop low while your trying to accelerate? I'm sure any car would make some noise by doing this.

I hear ya .... why because when pulling out of a place where you need to creap or parking or going over big speed bumps ...... you just cant tach it up and go .... need some delicate clutch work to make the right moves sometimes....

sounds like the throw-out bearing to me, but could be the tranny input shaft bearing

ok so you read that it sounds like a grinding noise at real low RPMs ... let me try and explain what it sounds like ..... kinda like ....

GRRR ....... GRRR ....... GRRRR

not a constant

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

and I suspect it will do it in reverse too since that is the only other time the RPMs would drop like that .... I will try it at lunch and get back with everyone ....

Thanks everyone

I understand this, but my car makes tons of noises in traffic or over speedbumps if I let the RPMs drop too low as well; I don't think there is a car around that wouldn't. Since this is the only time it does it, I'm thinking there isn't anything wrong with your car. Why can't you just hold the RPMs at 800-1500 and feather the clutch when doing parking lot manuvers, or just coast with the clutch in?

I had a similar problem in all of my gears, I'm no tranny mechanic but I'd say chances are it could possibly be an input shaft bearing. Those tend to go out pretty commonly on hondas. Get it checked by a good mechanic though and they could tell you.

See, that's the thing though, he says it only does it when he lets the idle drop low (I'm assuming lower than idle speed) for parking lot / speed bump manuvers. The car isn't meant to run in that rev range, and is bound to make some noises.

If it was doing it in all gears, or at specific times; then I'd say look into the tranny.

you have a good point on that one, mine tended to do it mainly in 2nd and 3rd with acceleration. i guess if its wehn he slows down to REALLY low revs it would kinda rattle from it being so low.
