tranny noise (need help)
On my stock 99 civic EX, the tranny makes some chattering/clunking noises when the car is idling. When I am driving in gear, the noise turns into a whirling sound at any speed. The higher rpm I go, the louder the whirling/whining noise. Do any of you guys know what can be wrong with my tranny? Is my tranny gone? Or could it be some bearing or some bs like that. The motor/trans has about 20,000 driven miles before I swapped a dohc vtec in there. About 5 months ago I took the b16 swap and put the sohc in.

When the clutch is engaged, the noise stops. Then when I am in gear, I can hear the tranny whine.

Ok two things when you here a whining noise and it is getting louder while you are driving, that means that your syncrose are chewed up=get a new tranny, Second if u here a chattering noise then it stops when engaging the clutch means that u have to take off your tranny and regrease the tranny shaft and "thro out bearing "

Re: tranny noise (el nano1983)
When I press the clutch in, the noise goes away. But when I release the clutch in neutral, the car jerks forward. I'm hoping that its the shift linkage that just came out of place causing the tranny to still be in gear. It doesn't make sense for a trans to go out in less than 30k.

That would be my guess as well.

Would a bad throwout bearing cause the car to jerk forward when in neutral after the clutch is let go? That part of the problem is stumping me. Its like the car is sort of in gear while it is in neutral.

Re: tranny noise (bomexciviccoupe)
So far what I've learned about the tranny is that it was a quart low on fluid. I have a leak somewhere. The noise got better when we put the fluid in. I am going to remove the tranny and see whats going on inside. Also, the clutch fluid was dirty. Anyone have thoughts on that?
