How did you paint those 96 GSR Wheels?
I have been thinking about painting them black for a while and seeing that thread with the pics finally pushed over the top
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=122571
Anyways how did you paint those, just put primer on em then paint em? Did you sand em?...has it lasted pretty good?

haha dont be a f*cking idiot and spend $200+ for power coating some stock rims (if expensive aftermarket, then yes
). My friend just recently SPRAY PAINTED his 98 GSR blades gunmetal grey with $4 dollor spray paint (engine bay paint, to stand up to excess heat) and hes already had 5 telling him how good it looked and if he got it powder coated
$4 per can, 1 can per wheel = 16$ (very impressive finish on rims)

Painted my rims a few months ago with engine paint. Just sanded it down a lil with 300 grit and then applied 3-4 coats of paint letting each coat dry b4 i applied the next and there has been NO fading and NO chipping. Dont waste your time and money powdercoating them you can just do the whole car for around 5 dollars. And one other thing there is at least 2 feet of snow on the ground and the roads are terrible so dont listen to these people telling you that its not good to paint them because it is just fine.

That wasn't nescessary. (see quote above) Spray painting may be a cheap... no, the cheapest alternative but hardly the best route to take. If you want something done right, sometimes you have to pay alittle more.

i know a person who had rims stolen from their car.
they put a claim in with insurance for standard rims... honda it turns out, charge $3500 AU for a set of 15" stockers.
thats around $1750 US.
i would hardly call them cheap

why do u guys have to be so technical about my rims hehe.....(i used to be profile gsr i changed my name) um yah i cleaned up some of the nicks and scratches and spray painted them with engine paint and a small amount of clear coat. nothing special just made a set of (in my opinion) ugly *** rims look a lot better. look you can go out and spend 200 to powder coat them or u can spend 5 bucks and spray paint them when i brought my car to a honda-tech meet hell half the people there thought that they were powder coated anyway.
plus ive had them on the car for a little while and no scratches or chips. and honestly if they do start to chip or scratch all i will do is just repray the rims. no biggie.
i had kosei k1s 17 inch in gunmetal but i blew my motor and needed money and someone offered me 100 less than what i paid for them and these rims sooo i took the money and spray painted the rims. a built turbo motor is a good thing

i used about 3 layers of Barbeque grille paint and two coats of clear coat....didn't sand anything but did wash the rims really good before i painted them..suprisingly they came out pretty good..I also taped off the tires.
of course i guess it would be better to take the tire off, paint them with 2 layers...sand them...then add another layer or to just powder coat them
but for about $20 and about 6hrs i can't complain
good luck painting yours

Guys, another Q on painting. Is it better to paint it without the tires on? Might sound like a stupid Q but i don't want my soon to be painted rims to get scratched while putting the tires on.
I bought a can of primer and a can of paint. I cleaned the wheels, degreased them, primed them, let the paint dry, painted them, let the paint dry, painted them again, let the paint dry. Nice flat black finish for under 10 dollars.
I would recommend against powdercoating them for $100-$200, you might as well save another $200 at that point and buy some Rotas.
Here are my HXs and Azenis. (man, I got these tires before anyone knew about them and they cost me like $34!! Bah!)

what brand of paint did you guys use? Is priming neccessary if using the engine paint? How about clear coat? By the looks of that picture, I'm definitely not gonna powder coat. Can I also get the paint color for the gunmetal color?
thanks
thanks
I used Krylon... a lot of people use that Rustoleum stuff cuz it comes in gunmetal and bronzish colors but that's not really my cup o' tea so I dunno. I primed because I thought it was a good idea. My friend painted his GSRs and didn't prime, and they look like total crap and flake and chip all the time. *Shrug*
i didnt pime my rims just sanded them down a lil and sprayed on the engine paint i have not had ne flaking but priming is deffinatly not a bad idea.

I don't have experience in painting wheels, but painting in general its good to use a primer prior to applying the color you have chosen.
About spray painting rims.. I have a set of 94 GSR rims that I want to paint. But, what do I need to know and do before painting them.. You said you cleaned some of the nicks and scratches... How?.. Did you sand them out??.. I've never painted anything before and I'm a little cautious about doing this.. But I do know that from what I've read, I need to sand them down a bit first.. Does that mean sand off the silver color or does that not come off??.. Then after that clean them.. Then I should prime them.. Then buy a couple cans of spray paint and put on 3 to 4 coats of it.. Then after that, buy a can of clear coat and apply 2 to 3 coats.. But how do I do that??.. I don't remember seeing clear coat come in a spray can/bottle.. But anyways, is this right??..
When i did my rims i just cleaned them with a rag and got all of the dust/dirt off. After that i sanded them down with some 320 grit sandpaper just so that the area you are working with is nice and smooth. Then i cleaned it off with a rag again and applied 3-4 coats of engine paint letting each layer dry b4 adding the next coat. Its been a few months in the snow and no problems with chipping or fading i would highly recommend painting them to anyone. Just did my 3rd set of rims with some chamelion paint and they look sick
