rpm problems in 5th gear. also oil in spark plugs
this is for one of my teachers in school:
1991 civic lx.
when traveling on the highway in 5th gear above 60mph and once it hits 3k rpm it starts jumping upwards. the tach jumps from 3k to 3.5k rpm up and down up and down. it first started when i would do 75mph and its started to do it at 70, and now 65. there are no changes in the car driving but i dont go fast enough to hit that rpm anymore. the car runs smooth regardless, no bogging no hesitation. just dont want to get stuck anywhere.
havent checked for codes yet. will today.
also yesturday i went to replace my spark plugs and wires and each plug came out with oil on it and oil where the spark plugs sit.

My tach was doing the same thing but in a different gear. Never figured out why it happened, but I always assumed that it was just a loose wire issue. I thought I was the only one with this problem. Anyone ever fix it?
The oil in the spark plug holes is probably from the gaskets that should go on the valve cover being damaged.

the throttle problem might have something to do with the throttle position sensor. if one of those goes bad, all kinds of weird stuff can happen. it should be throwing a code seven if that is the problem, but i would still check it out.
and the oil in the spark plug holes probably is just the little o-rings under the valve cover that seal the spark plug tubes going bad. they are pretty cheap and you can just get them at honda.

i thought about the tps, but she hadnt checked for the code yet so i wasnt sure.
i'll have her check out the o-rings. they'll probably be coroded right?

the o rings for the spark plug tubes are actually rubber. if you take the valve cover off and look at the under side of the valve cover, you will see 4 rubber rings. if they have never been replaced, they are probably in the process of slow disintegration. you can just take them out and replace them with new o rings from honda, probably not more than $10.
