just wanted to know if a faulty o2 or a faulty catalytic converter can cause your radiator fan to not turn on. i've been throwing a p0420 and i heard that the reason for the code could be either the cat has crapped out or the o2 has crapped out. which would cause the radiator fan to not turn on though? i've been gingerly driving the car cuz it overheats really easily now. thanks for any help.

awesome...how can i check the relay though? i know the motor works cuz i wired it directly to the battery and it turned on. i know that this is probably answered somewhere in the vast archives but since i'm already writing i figure i'll just ask. lol. where is the fuse for the fan located? is there another one than the one next to the relay or no? thanks again.
code p0420 is for an o2 sensor. who pulled the code?? you need to know if it is bank #1 or #2.
1 is the o2 sensor in the header
2 is the o2 sensor after the cat

i pulled the code but it didn't specify if it was a bank 1 or bank 2. it just shot out p0420 with nothing else. so either way, i'd have to buck up and pay for a new o2. lol. i seem to remember reading somewhere that if the secondary o2 goes bad your cars cooling system can get all buggy...but i'm not sure if i dreamed that or not though. :D

Umm... there is only one cylinder bank on an inline-four engine...
I think what civictildeath was trying to tell you is to figure out if it's your primary O2 or the secondary. The primary is before the converter, the secondary is after. If your secondary is throwing a code, it means you might have a bad converter, and no it will not affect your cooling system or fan.

go to autozone have them them read it for you. they will tell you if it is bank 1 or bank 2. and i have never heard of an o2 sensor or cat messing up the colling system. i ahve ran months with a bad secondary o2 sensor and never had coolant problems
and yes they are classified that way. trust me i have seen it with my own eyes on thier machine. and it even states it this way in the manuals

I'm not saying you're completly wrong, maybe you just read it wrong. How would they classify them on an OBD2 GM V8 with 4 o2 sensors? Well let me tell you... Bank 1 pre-cat, Bank 1 post-cat, Bank 2 pre-cat, Bank 2 post-cat. Bank one being the left 4 cylinders, bank 2 being the right 4 cylinders. Our engines only have one cylinder bank... trust me. The pre-cat o2 is the primary, the post-cat is the secondary.

awesome...so that means that i probably need a new cat(mine is a high flow type and when i tried to get smogged with it on[supposedly was 50state and carb legal] i was a gross polluter. the mechanic thought that maybe the cat had crapped out). i figure i'll just spend the couple hundred and see how things go. :D thanks for the help guys.
now i just need to figure out what's wrong with the radiator fan. thanks!!

btw, i'm assuming that it has to do with either the secondary o2 or the cat because the description of the code p0420 is catalyst system efficiency below threshold rather than code p0430 which is front bank catalyst system efficiency below threshold. i'm assuming that the p0430 code has to deal with the primary o2(hence the use of the words 'front bank') and the p0420 code has to deal with either the cat or the secondary o2 by process of elimination. :D
thanks again...hopefully someone can help figure out the reason for the crappy fan not working. anyone have a roundabout price for the relays??

If you want to keep the high-flow, you may need to get an o2 simulator (do a quick search.) As for the rad fan, check to make sure all your coolant temperature sensors are plugged in and the connectors aren't corroded.

i'm thinking it might be that the engine coolant temperature switch may have crapped out but i'm not entirely sure how to test it.
i have a honda service manual for 96-00 civics but i don't understand what they mean when they say to measure the resistance between the a and b terminals when referring to how to test the ect switch.
also, i didn't have a problem running the highflow cat with any of the o2 sensors until maybe a month ago or so. i'd been running the hf cat since a few years back now with no problems. i figure i'll replace the cat and the cel will be cleared and it won't come back. :D
the rad fan is another problem altogether. i'm going to try to figure out how to see if the ect switch is crapped out and find out if that's my problem. thanks again for the help.

technically, none. i haven't let it progress to the point where i have to pull over and let it chill out for awhile. anytime i see the water temp gauge rising i either pull off the freeway or i'm close enough to my destination that i deal with it. if i'm driving the car won't get too hot but if it's stop and go or anything below 5mph it'll start heating up really quickly.
Mine did that once when I accidentally pulled the little plug off of the thermostat housing that controls the fan when I was doing some other work on the car. I just had to jam the plug back on and it worked fine.

so i guess JDMlyfestyle is wrong as well as the people who wrote the codes and books on them?? there are more codes written with BANK 2 in the books that he didnt type into code thread
im not saying you are wrong but i am telling it how it is written and posted in the books and on the code readers. thats just how it is.
and if thread starter needs an o2 simulator, check in my o2 sim install thread in my sig below. has place to buy and how to install

That's fine, I believe that. Let's not start another useless Honda-Tech argument in someone's thread. I was just stating what I learned in Trade school... whichever is correct, who cares... because I really don't.
