Is it worth throwing a JDM D15b head on a USDM D16y8?
I have a broken D15b and was talking with my friend about his Y8 motor. I know the D15b has a hotter cam in it. Would compression be raised by using the D15b head? I know nothing of SOHC motors so any help or direction is appreciated. I thought there was a head/block comaprison around somewhere, can't see to find it. We're doing an auto-manual swap and throwing all my single cam parts on his Y8, so we're trying to maximize his sohc power with some OEM parts. I figured we'd do a timing belt, water pump, and head gasket(thinner) while we're shredding. I was able to get 125whp/98tq(dynojet) with my D15b, and I would love to see him get the same or more out of his D16. Hes thrilled, the thought of going from an auto D16y8 with intake/exhaust to a manual D sporting probably 30whp+ more.
Thanks.
Thanks.
the d16y8 head is "shaped" better than the d15b, from what i've heard. i suggest you guys swap the d15b cams into the d16y8 head.
Thats where the idea started. I know we can pick up some power with the cam. So maybe just throw the cam in with a new valvetrain and call it a day! I wonder how high it would make power with a new valvetrain and cam. My H22 went from peak at 7200 to peak ay 7900 with the cams and valvetrain.
Well, its a start! Thanks!

Oh, most definately the d15b cam is more agressive. I believe thats the reason it makes the same power as a 1.6 liter. The d15b benefits the least from the ZEX cam, and I believe the d16y8 benefited the most. I would love to see us get this engine up near stock B16 numbers.(130-135whp would be great with a near 8000rpms peak) We have talked a bit more about it, and I think we're going to do some mild headwork on the d15b head and throw it on the d16 block to see what happens.
