Default Bulb fitment and changeout for gen5 guage cluster...

Hey guys, what kind of bulbs do the fifth generation guage cluster take? Anyone know off-hand?

My 2nd question is this, can anyone tell me whether or not, if i change out the bulbs inside of the guage cluster, I will get a different colored light reflected through the stock guages? Or are the guage markings whats green and the bulbs are white? Thanks guys.

The Bulb size is 168

If you switch out the bulbs the color will remain green because it has a film over the numbers.

oh i see, thats interesting. In my Mazda6 the electroluminescent guages are basically lit up by LED's, i didnt know thats how the **** worked.

Anyhow, the bulb fitment is 168, would that stand the same for LED's?

I don't think it is 168 if you 're talking about those bulbs sit behind the gauge cluster. I believe it is T1 or something. Correct me

Yes, T1 1/2 is the same as #73/74. It is like 194 is the same as 168.

you think with the LED's it will look more like electroluminescent, because they use the same bulb format.

well im not messing with those lights, the only bulbs im changing are the ones which are on the outside of the cluster housing, the ones that light up the guages, i didnt feel like messing with those individual bulbs...

plus, the cool thing about it all is that the 4 major #168 bulbs on the back of the cluster are coming out in favor of LED bulbs, super Xenon bulbs, so im hoping that because the guages will light up green either way, they will look like green electroluminescent.

The only other thing im worried about is the gas guage, someone told me that once everything is installed, and all is said and done, when i turn the car on for the first time it will auto level to the correct amount of gas, is this true?

Cool, be sure and take some pics. I may consider doing that if your's works out well.

As far as I know the gas gauge will auto level. It did when I swapped out my old cluster for another one. The gauge on the new cluster read a quarter tank before I connected it and afterward it read 3/4 which was what I had in the tank.

ok update, there are 4 small bulbs that can be changed from the outside of the cluster. There are also 4 slightly larger ones that can also be changed. I have gotten the LED's for the 4 smaller ones but am not sure what size the 4 larger bulbs are. I am thinking that they are #168. The smaller bulbs are # 74.

dah you shoulda pmmed me about it.

its 4 194/168 bulbs and one 74 bulb on the back.

2 more 74 bulbs on top that light up the needles. thats all that illuminates the cluster.

the back has a green tint film so it will only show to a certain degree blue and green colors.

however, you can wipe off the film on the gauge cluster. mind you this is much more involved on the speedometer. and im not gonna say how, bc it is a friend's method.

teh temp gauge cannot wipe off, so you have to figure out some way. i did it my own way, and id like to keep it at that.

i would actually like to just get brighter bulbs, i dont mind them being green when they light up (gauges). I just want them to be brighter. The only thing i need to do is find a reliable LED place to sell me some of their bulbs, that isnt in Hong Kong. I got 4 #74 bulbs, but having a hard time switching them out, the little ones dont want to come out, it sucks!

leds wont work for your gauges. they dont have enough of a diffusement even at wide angles to provide the coverage you need. and its 4 194 bulbs and 1 74 bulb just for the gauges backlit. i dont know where you're getting the 4 74 bulb schematic from. theres a whole bunch of other bulbs underneath the circuitry that you can switch out but thats for like cel, turn signals etc.

on the guage cluster i have, there are the two illumination #74 bulbs on top, and one on the back side of the cluster, and i got 2 pairs which is why i have 4. THe 168/194 bulbs, you suggest no LED. Ok, just a regular super white or something like that?

oh okay i thought you meant that there were four on the cluster itself on the back side. my bad.

yah the leds wont give you the kind of dispersement that you need unless you make a custom bracket all the way around every single gauge as many people have done.

the super white will give you a almost green color with a hint fo blue still. the only offside is the color somewhat changes after a couple of months.

you might want to try here

http://www.autolumination.com they have good prices and a lota assortment.

they have wide angle leds also, but it was too expensive for me to make it worth trying. let me know how it goes either here or on a-d. sorry if i sounded grumpy in the other post - two midterms and three allnighters can do that to me.
