Default Top cylinder brace ?

I'm sure everyone has seen a top cylinder brace for a b series motor, anyway I'm building an engine for a friend of mine's car and he is insisting that I get this brace welded into the block, what does everyone think about this?, because every machine shop I have spoke with wants nothing to do with it, so basically I am looking for some opinions, does it need to be welded in? will it make a difference? I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this, but if anyone has any experience with one of these braces or has any input for the situation it would be appreciated

they are called blockgaurds and they dont work very well. Either run stock sleeves W/O it or get it sleeved. I would throw that thing in the trash
