how do i know for sure this thing is vtec. The seller says that it is off a 95 with 60xxx miles but the valve cover is not fitting on right, it seems to be hittin the little seals underneath the cover where the sparkplugs go in. Also the valve cover does not say vtec on it. Just a polished cover with HONDA on it. Is there anyway to tell for sure what I have?

look 4 the v-tec solenoid on the left side of the head on the intake side by the distributor

 

not all the vtec valve covers say vtec on them, but the plug wires should be on the front of the cover and there should be a vtec selonid on the back left

 

try looking for a casting code on the head

b16's would read pr3- then another number

gsr's would read p72

 

is it a copmplete head?? if it is look for the cams to have 3 lobes on them. if not a complete head then look to see if on the left side there is a place for 3 screws to put on the vtec solenoid

sounds like a y8 head to me.
