Help out a wanna-be honda driver
well, i've been searching around this board at some of your insane cars, and i just picked up a near-mint 92 hatch shell....
I have a decent car now, however I'm going to be selling it by the end of the summer to fund my honda project. I have driven a gsr hatch with some juice, a 92.5(?) integra with an xSi motor and some cam work... and also a 91 hatch with a b16, also i belive the xSi motor...
Now, the thing is, I can't decide what I really want to do motorwise, I am a noob, so all the info i've found was from searching around here and K20a.org...
so here is the dilema, I will the money to do basically any swap I want... here are my choices:
B16 boosted with some bottom end work ~ 5.5-6.5k if done right
B18 (gsr) no internals and some juice (75? maybe) ~4.5-5k
K20a i/h/e tuned (from what I have found you can get a consistan 211-217hp and about 146?lb/trq and run 12's all day. ~7-9k and I won't be able to do it myself
so what do you think? is the new K series technology worth the extra money? I'm not swapping just for the sake of going fast in a straight line, I may be doing some AutoX and possibly some track days, who knows.
Any input would be super helpful, because I am totally stumped as to what to do, being all 3 of these setup's would be primo...
thank you in advance

cliffs: 92 hatch, boosted b16, juiced b18 (gsr), or the new K20a swap

well w/e
IMHO, i'm gonna wait a couple years probably before i jump the k bandwagon....prices are only gonna be dropping for motors, mounts, etc...so in the meantime i'll probalby go b16 turbo

K owns all, but its pricey. If you can afford it, it's hands down the best option. If money is somewhat an issue, get a b18c5 or h22a. Search for the differences its a constant debate as to which one is better, and we don't need to start that here. If it's not going to be daily driven, maybe a b18b turbo.

yes...cheap blocks, cheap tranny, cheap swap
easiest to boost for the least amount of money

With a B16 (SI) you have the option of two different motors. The earlier comes with different cams and a cable tranny (about 10 less hp). The newer JDM SI motor is like the USDM '00 SI. The cams are similar to GSR cams. With a GSR your getting more hp and more torque. The newer K sereis models are nicer motors with more potential. The K series will eventually replace the B series motors of now. When deciding what motor to choose a lot of things have to be considered (you dont want to buy a motor and regret your purchase in the future). All of the B serier motors can have the blocks swapped with a Honda CRV block. The purpose of this is more torque. The CRV motor is bigger, more durable, and less expensive than having the stock block board. The decision should be made considering; Is it a daily driver? Will it be used to race at the track? What is the ratio of time between the two? How much do you want to spend? What do you realisticaly expect to get out of the swap? After you figure out what you want, find out which motor will suit you. Good luck, happy tuning.

I would have said the b20 is the LEAST durable of ALL b series motors

agreed. cylinder walls are thin. get it sleeved if you go b20.

There is NO reason to get a B20 if your going to re-sleeve. The ONLY difference between a B18b & a B20 is the OEM sleeves. Get a B18b unless your planing on re-using the OEM pistons, but for the life of me I can't understand why you would want to do that...

really torn here, the fact that the price of the k20 can only go down, and its a very new swap, i don't see, unless i come into some extra money soon, why i would do that swap. (however it is my #1 choice)
i've been mulling it over, and i have a lot of time before i actually do the swap, but its looking like b18c with some juice and some light internals for now... and boost down the road...

I will indulge in some motor building fantasy's. I think you should do an LS Turbo sammy.
Assuming you have an obdI shell(which I know you do) and it looks like you have atLEAST 5k to put into the car(which I know you do) I think you should go LS turbo.
COMPLETE change over from Hmotors is 2200. Your OBDI so this is EVERYTHING you need to put an LS in your car. http://www.hmotorsonline.com/s...30007
5000-2200=2800. Figure 2700 since you have to pay shipping on the motor.
$2700 buys a hell of a nice custom turbo kit with all new parts and engine management.
LS blocks and trannys are DIRT cheap. So NO worries about blowing your motor because even if you do(which is unlikely) a new block is easy to find and affordable.
LS blocks are also about as bullet proof for boost as they come for stock honda blocks. Ive seen STOCK BLOCK ls's run 400whp DAILY on hondata/uberdata.
Enjoy your 12second car.

My vote is for LS too, but Magoon forgot to add in the price of a b16 or b18c tranny if you want to hit those 12's. The LS has econobox gears that are long as hell.
hmph... thanks for all the input...
K20a2 is still very appealing.. however
a boosted ls is sounding good too...
300+hp = fun
k20a2 = new fun
both = :headache:

a b18c5 (type R) is like 5 g's just for the motor how do you say if money is only somewhat of an issue.

I would also hold off on buying the K20 untill more parts come out for it if you want numbers like that. Companies are still coming out with parts for the motor that will cost lots and might not be perfect. B16a Turbo is what im working on... It gets my vote (price and power wise)... Good luck

K20 costs more, that's how.
