SOHC VTEC Camshaft... Zex 59300 or Crower Stage 2
First let me go ahead and say yes I searched and I'm posting this in here rather then 'All motor' because I'm hoping for a better response.
So I ordered a Zex 59300 camshaft for my d16z6 but now I'm thinking I should have went with the Crower stage 2 after reading up on the both of them. It seems as if for the most part people seem to be split 50/50 on the two choices. My mods as of right now are only I/H/E and a VAFC sitting in its box waiting for a purpose. In the very near future I plan to add valve springs, retainers, and cam gear and then before the end of the year I'm hoping to add some boost. Right now I'm just looking for the best cam for my situation. Anyone with experience with either cam or meaning words of advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks

My buddy had the comp cam which is the same 59300 as the zex. He hated it. One night at the track for the hell of it we took it out and put in a stock Y8 cam and ran 2 tenths faster. That is my only experience with that cam.
You can also look into the Rocket Motorsports SOHC cam.

how did he have his cam gear set?
i have a zex stage 2 cam (one for the d16y8 motor)
even with an aem cam gear, going anywhere besides zero lost power.
you can run a stock cam gear with it IMO and it will generate the most power

it was on the dyno for almost 7 hours for tuning. in that time it picked up maybe 1-2 whp.
The cam setting was tried in all positions. settled for the final position because it had the best overall curve.
With the Y8 cam it had the stock cam gear.
Had no tuning with the Y8 cam and it ran better. that is the extent of my experience with that particular cam.

i have the zex 59300 cam and love it, and for the record you dont need retainers/springs for the cam, unless you want to rev past redline, the zex cam makes power to 7800rpm, and vtec hauls ***. It was a HUGE improvement over the stock cam,i dont know how that other guy lost power/slower 1/4 mile. There was a review with dynos where they put the cam in a nearly stock d16z6 (I/H/E) and it made a peak of 14 whp and 9 ft/lbs of torque, which even more can be seen with FI and more modifications.
ZEX 59300 Cam
edit: also i have a boosted d16z6 and for ***** and giggles because some people think the cam doesnt make power,i put the stock cam back in and it was a night and day difference, somuch midrange and top end was lost

My friends and I all use crower, I think they have a way better reputation than zex and comp cams.......
I was also researching that cam before I bought a y8 crower stage 1 (for the stock idleand most people said that it sucked.
Crower has been around for many many years so that's why I trust them.
And I'm still not sure about zex........

ya the sad part crower has been around awhile and some of their b-series cams are prone to snapping... just an fyi, not bashing them i have their springs/retainers, but just because a company has been around awhile means nothing if their products dont perform as intended. (not saying crower doesnt do that)

hey i got the 59300 cam and zex valve springs, u dont need to buy aftermarket retainers, u can use the stock ones, just look for the valve springs. i paid 200 shipped for the cam brand new, and 155 for the valve springs brand new.
