weird noise. need help and/or advice.
before i state the problem. the car is a 1996 honda civic ex (d16y8) and currently not turboed. recently had a new alignment, struts, rotots, and pads installed, and i also noticed that my tires were a tad low and brought them to about 30-34 psi in the front and about 28-30 on the back on 14 inch wheels.
the car seemed to be running fine with no weird problems and i ended up racing an old 1960's something ford truck with a fresh 350 in it. got to about 110 and had to do some heavy braking but everything seemed fine. went to the library to grab a few books and when i got back in my car to leave, i instanly heard a grinding noise like 2 rocks were being rubbed together. i pulled off to the side of the road and popped the hood to make sure everything was ok under there. Which it seemed to be, so i got back in my car and attempted to drive it off. the noise reappeared until i hit 4th gear and it went away for good. i thought my problems were solved. however, now, i am constantly noticing a slight "whirring" noise at speeds of abuot 35+. the best way to describe the noise is if you took a 1" piece of PVC pipe and held it in the air on a windy day. if you havent done this, than it sounds like somebody left the window slightly cracked and wind is rushing in at high speeds. i couldnt really trace the noise to the front or the back and its hard to pinpoint its whereabouts due to my slightly loud exhaust.
any help would be greatly appreciated. the car is actually now in the possession of my good friend and i want to make sure everything on it is in good working condition for obvious reasons.
thanks in advance,
jay

I suggest you muffle that exhaust so you can find where the noise is coming from. You'll never really find the problem unless you can properly hear where the problem is coming from. It would be counterproductive if you attempted to do so.

well, i dont really see how i can muffle the exhaust when im driving at 45+ mph. i dont have a silencer and i dont know of any other ways.
im thinking maybe i got a rock stuck somewhere and its rubbing against a rotor.

ever thought about putting the stock exhaust back on? Unless we can somewhat pinpoint the location of the sound, troubleshooting the problem would be useless guesses.

the reason i got a new exhaust was because mine was basically leaking in 4 different spots. so i just dumped it. besides, taking off my current exhaust and putting on the stock one would take a few hours in my small garage alone and i can clearly hear the noise.

I don't mean to be an *** about it but if you can clearly hear the noise you should be able to pinpoint where the noise is at. Help us help you.

being able to clearly hear the noise doesnt mean i can find exactly where it is coming from while im behind a moving vehicle with the window open. if its in the engine bay, i suppose i could remove my hood and drive around leaning out the window checking for the noise. i may aswell take off the carbon fiber hood and put the stock one back on while im also putting the stock exhaust back on. once i put back all the stock parts in im sure ill locate that noise instantly. it wont take me long to replace my old intake, header, cam, manifold, radiator, flywheel, clutch, shifter, stereo, wheels, plugs, wires, and distributor. god, i hope the turbo doesnt get in my way.
