Default Honda Odyssey in Grassroots?

I seem to recall GRM printed an article a year or two ago that compared the Odyssey with an older Porsche. Am I remembering correctly? And if so, does anybody remember the gist of the article? Beginning to look at a replacement for the truck, in the $20k range, probably used, preferably able to tow ~3000lbs.

Also considering Volvo S60/V70, Accord (although it can't tow), Acura TL (again, can't tow), and a few others. Not really interested in SUVs or trucks, as most seem to be 1. pricey, 2. overkill for Laura's 5 mile commute, and 3. more expensive than wagons/sedans.

My neighbor occasionally tows a small boat with his Odyssey. Of course, he spent about $1200 on the hitch (which Honda won't install without oil and trans coolers). But he said he was surprised at how well it did with ~2500 lbs behind it.

Not sure if a V70 would be up to the task or not - I don't recall ever seeing a FWD Volvo towing anything...

The Tacomas are pretty good, don't know if your missus can drive a standard but the new ones come in a 6 speed. Plus the back is pretty roomy, I could sit there comfortably and I am 6'1". That would be a plus if you have kids.

Yeah that's was the article. I think the point of it was that almost any new car has performance that outshines the best of "the good ol days".

Looks like they have another one now, and it seems to tow.

Also keep in mind that GRM just stripped 350pounds out of their civic, so its not quite so porky.

Well I just bought this car for a tow vehicle/dd:

4700pounds of 70's Mopar goodness, rated to tow 5500 pounds with chyrslers tow package i.e. stiffer rear springs, trans cooler, sure-grip, and a classIII hitch. The problem is always finding one without problems, but the prices on the full-size cars hasnt skyrocketed (yet) and you can find most of them with a big block 383/400/440, and only get mileage as bad as a full-size pickup if its running good.

I think the odyssey is rated to tow 6000lbs.

3500#'s according to honda, with required surge-type or electric trailer brakes, load-distribution hitch and transmission- and power steering-fluid coolers

My buddy Chris S. used to tow his civic with his odyssey. It was the older odyssey though with a smaller engine compared to the new one.

Have fun with the transmitions, lol. They can't even stand up to normal driving. Honda v6 transmitions are terrible.

Fuggit, Laura poo-pooed the minivan idea. She refuses to acknowledge that she is a soccer (and lacrosse and football and scouts and ...) mom. Turbo brick, here I come. As for towing - I don't have a race car anymore, so it would be mostly Home Depot, Myer-Emco, and landfill trips.

Hey Cory! Anyway, my 02 Odyssey used tow my 89 Civic STS car great. I had a steel trailer and no load distributing hitch. I do recommend the load distibuting hitch, but I used to get 16 mpg towing! I highly recommend the Odyssey for a light car tow.

Yes, I found humor in that as well. I guess the V70R does have blingin' wheels.

She drives my GMC currently and hates it. Too big, too hard to park, too much gas, etc. And I agree - trucks make horrible daily drivers. If I had known two years ago that I would be trading the race-car and trailer for a house and family, I would never have bought the monstrosity.

If thats the case, maybe something like a 2wd 4 door Dakota is more along the right lines. I've always found it easier to toss plywood and such into a pickup bed than into the back of a minivan or SUV, and there's always the fact that most of the stuff I take to the landfill usually isnt anything I want riding shotgun with me in the cabin. Also the Club Cabs are pretty roomy, and with 2wd the sit rather low for a pickup and drive pretty well from what I've seen. Get better mileage in 2wd too... Dakota's can be found for fairly cheap too.
