Yokohama Avid H4s - my halfassed review.
I replaced my 205/65/15 Cooper WeatherMaster's with these Avid 215/65HR15's.
On TireRack they say the traction rating is Excellent and got 8.8 out of 10 for dry traction, 8.4 for wet traction...ect...The two basic traction ratings that I was wanting a high rating in.
But LET ME TELL YOU, these so-called RATINGS on tirerack.com are from the CONSUMERS, most of which are emotional about the new tires and forget about the placebo effect! They are not Professional reviews, like I moronically assumed!
DONT TRUST TIRERACK's RATING SYSTEM, it's bullshit.
Ok, I love tire grip, just like yall do, but this is unacceptable! My Kumho 711's (195/50HR15's) on my prelude stuck like GLUE compared to these AVIDs. And the kumho 711's got a dry traction rating of 8.3 and wet traction of 7.3 (according to the consumer ratings). And the kumhos make these tires seem like total **** in compasin, and we all know that Kumho 711's aren't even all that great.
The Cooper Winter tires grip better than these Avid's do, they have a more progressive traction threshhold and are much more predictable. The Avid's do have better traction for launching the Maxima vs the Coopers, but i'm talking about handling and braking. A wired thing about these Avids is they Smoke like HELL when you lock them up durring braking, which is kinda a cool spectical due to the dramatic nature, but honeslty I dont know what that means, is that good or bad from a performance standpoint? They leave black marks very easily, theyre like cheap Sneakers on a gym floor. My Kumhos and Coopers RARELY leave black marks....
Sorry about all this blabbling...Im just very disapointed in these tires so far, i've only had them on for 2 days now, but I can tell you right now that they are NOT what I thought theyd be, they are not even CLOSE to a Performance all-season. These are junk if you want to drive hard on the streets, they are dangerous for those who push their car. I'd say pass on these tires and get something else that provides better and more predictable grip.
The nature of these tires make this tire the poster child for the saying "All-seasons do OK at everything, but are great at nothing"
Anyone else have these tires, any opposing views id love to hear, as I dont have much tire experience...

Uhhh... what were you expecting? You purchased an all-season highway tread tire and expect them to react like a race tire? Secondly, you also bought a high sidewall size.
Finally I assume you are doing all this on the street... not smart, not cool.

Yeah, I figured that out when the Yoko ES100s (or some other summer tire) was rated at 6.5 for winter / snow traction.

At least you've identified the problem.
So why did you post this here again?

Because I couldn't figure out where exactly to post it....On my forum there is a wheel/tire/suspension forum...but I couldn't find one on here...
Leadfoot....Lay off...Sure I did it on the street....does it mean I did it on busy streets with traffic around? No it doesn't...My city is small, and traffic is minimal, there are backroads everywhere I go. This is where I did my initial tire testing....Dont try to come off like a saint, it's not appreciated.
And yeah, I know its just an all-season...I agree, I wasnt expecting it to react like a "race tire", but I was expecting it to have decent grip for a Street Tire. And it doesn't....I'm just tryin' to let people know that these tires pretty much suck if you want a grippy high performance all-seaon tire....I've been in other cars that have all-season tires that grip MUCH better than this tire.

i actually LIKE my avid T4's, which are step below H4's even. they were on 13" rims and i got em because they were dirt cheap new, $120 for a whole set.
they performed pretty damn good on the street actually. my first impression was that they squeeled a lot. but i bumped up the pressure to about 35psi and i could never make them squeel from that point. i even preferred to use them on the streets than my azenis. which i felt i was just wasting tread going back and forth from the grocery store. thats why i got the T4's, so that i dont waste my azenis or whatever else i spent good money on, and for the california rain season.
i certainly would not have gotten them for a 15" tire. sounds like you just wanted to be cheap but had high expectations. i wanted a cheap tire, and got a cheap tire and exceeded my expectations. perhaps you were misled by tire racks customer review system, but i think everyone but you realized its based on customer reviews.
btw, tire forum is here: its labelled Wheel and Tire

lastly, we would appreciate you not spazzing out when you give your next tire review. thanks kid.

I dont get exactly what youre saying....I'm cheap because I got these tires for a 15" wheel? Of course price was an issue, i'm not made of money. My Kumho 711's were only $39/each and they work just fine. These tires I got were around $68/each. Not expensive, but not uber cheap either....I have 15" wheels on my 97 Maxima, that's why I got 15" tires....How is this being cheap? Should I buy 18" rims in order to not be cheap?

I guess so....But they could make it more obvious that they are consumer ratings...it is purposely misleading to make it look like they are iron-clad ratings, which they are not. At least I know now...

look at the UTOQ rating. its 500 for the T4s. compare that to ES100, 280. UTOQ ratings arent definitive to performance, but its a good indicator between grip and tread life. the tires were obviously made for long wear. perhaps understanding this is new to you as well. i can see why youre so confused then.
i would not have wasted my money on 15" tires that have high wear ratings. i would have gotten REAL performance tires for my 15" rims, and buy some cheap 13" rims and tires with long tread life.

First off you are in the Road Racing / Autocross forum, not the "Backroads that no one is else is on so I will drive like a bat-out-hell and slam on my brakes to see if my tires smoke" forum. Secondly, you are giving a review of a tire that you are not using for road racing or autocrossing and that is not meant for either. Finally, I don't claim to be a saint, I'm just not foolish enough to do tire tests or high speed driving on something other than a track because I would be placing my life or someone else's life at risk. I guess you are just setting yourself up for the next Darwin award.

I'm reading up on the UTQG ratings and other ratings set by NHTSA and DOT....
I know my tire does have AA rating for traction and UTQG of 400. Of course it means how long the tread lasts, which in a lot of cases shows how hard the compound is and usually harder compounds provide less grip. So my compound is pretty hard, but not the hardest....
One thing that doesn't seem to make sense to me is the Traction rating of AA...They only test the traction rating by using the tire on a machine and they lock the tire up and then they measure the grip the tire generates to unlock itself and start rolling again...but they only do this on wet pavement! WHy only wet? The UTQG traction test doesn't evaluate dry braking, dry cornering, wet cornering, or high speed hydroplaning resistance. This sucks...I wonder why?
I read some more of the reviews from people...and they claim they drive spiritedly and they also claim that these tires are "great gripping and great handling tires" Bullcrap.........Then there are a select few who realize that they grip like crap, and that the sidewalls are too soft, which I noticed...I'm guessing of course that the sidewalls are weak because of the geoemtry to the wheel and tire. The wheel isn't that wide, it's just a stocker, and the tire is 215/60, not low profile by any means...Maybe I need to air them up to 44psi...they are at 38psi right now.
Oh BTW, I found the Suspension forum....Sorry for posting this in here!
