i know u can get the type r control arms from jhp.com,, they usually sell them in the omni coilover kits since omni doesn't make a alum on for 88-91 civic/crx's

But they are so nice and shiny, and you can't forget new bushings and pre-drilled sway bar holes. Did I also mention they were shiny?

When looking at that website at the ones the have for sale ... Why does only the 88 CRX use a different LCA compared to all the 89+ CRX, Civics?

I believe it was a cost decision by Honda. They went to the cheaper cast ones on the US and the majority of Euro Civic/CRX/Integra models while the JDM models kept the 88 CRX type of arms all the way through to the EG Civic and DC Integra. The arms re-appeared on the US ITR albeit with stiffer bushings.

A second factor was handling. The lighter stamped arms made the tail end of the cars more responsive, and perhaps Honda was afraid of getting lawsuits because some (less skilled) drivers would lose control.

the rear lower control arms have absolutely no affect on the steering/handling differences between USDM 88 and 89-91 CRX.

youre parroting bad info. please stop.

you have disc or drum brakes?.. if you have drum brakes.. you can use 87 hf rear drums.. thats about 2 pounds less rotating mass than the cast iron drums.. and 10 pounds lighter than disck brakes per wheel...

i dont mean to hijack, but heres your proof.

picture of a 88 CRX

picture of a 89 CRX

you can make out that the 88 has the bottom end of the stamped metal toe piece welded nearly flush with the bottom pan of the chassis. on the 89 however, its obviously raised about an inch higher.

this ALONE is the difference in the toe change found in 88 cars, and not 89-91.

the story goes that honda of america was involved in the late 80's/early 90's ESCORT/FIREHAWK road racing series, which is what world challenge has become now. honda fielded some CRX's in that race. the cars were supposed to run near stock height. the problem was that when the car brakes really hard, the back wheels toed out too much, making it hard to control for the drivers. so they gave honda of japan the feedback and they changed it by the next year. as you can see, the change was very simple but effective.

lets put an END to first of all the myth that 88's had passive rear steering and 89+ didnt. secondly, the stamped box end arms that the 88's had (and shared in design with Type R's) has NOTHING to do with the extra toe curve exhibited by the 88's.

the change is in the chassis.

btw, any difference in the toe curve is all neglible when you lower the car on either model.

btw, i think the drums are a lot more than 2 lbs lighter. theyre pretty damn light.

We've been told the same by one of our testers (he ran a CRX for a few years in the world challenge series, and still drives it at track events) about the revision on the rear toe linkage point to address toe-out issues during braking. This was some time ago and your post serves to confirm this.

not exactly.. hen i was searching for a set... i found some 85-87 hf's that had the cast iron drums.. you can tell the difference because the aluminum drums are finned...
