Default You gonna think me crazy......

Have I got a fun one for you tech gurus!

I will be running my latest car aquistion (ITR powered 92 Civic H/B) in Ontaio's Touring GT Championship. In this series, each car is assigned a minimum weight determined by engine size, # of valves, # of cams, brake rotor diameter (f&r), number of caliper pistons (f&r) and a couple of other items.

One of the items REALLY got my attention. That being the difference in weight between running with the ITR rear disks on the car (which the car comes with) and swapping over to rear drum brakes. Now, rear brakes really don't do a hell of a lot other than making the inside rear tire stop spinning while at the apex of a tight corner

Basically it boils down to being able to run my car 275 lbs lighter if I switch to rear drums!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Holy crap, everyone must agree that this "backwards" mod is worth while.

Soooooooooooooooo.

I need to find a way to put rear drum brakes on a ITR rear suspension. The car has ITR 5 bolt hubs front and rear. You guys know of any Honda/Acura rear drum brakes (5 bolt) that I might be able to get in there. I already have a couple of the appropriate prop valves for drum brakes on the 92 H/B chassis.

Let the thinking wheels turn.............

Is there any reason the car must retain the 5 lug, why not just use 4 lug wheels if you are allowed in the swap.

run stock teg front uprights and stock civic rear drums. get 4 bolt wheels. the ITR front calipers will perfect in the front with the itr disc so long as you use a 3mm spacer behind the disc (don't quote me on that one yet ) but do not grind the caliper.

5 botl rear drums would be a custom thing and would probably have to come from a accord or somthing.

Check out a base model accord or something like that.

That would involve a lot more parts than I was hoping to change. Then I would have to locate some Civic front knuckles, use modified front rotors, change all 12 wheels to 4 bolt...AND still change the rear to drum.

Like most racers, I like cheap mods over expensive mods when they have the same result

5 bolt rear drums come on newer base model Accords, 1st gen CRV's, 2nd gen Odyssey's (HUGE/HEAVY rear drums)

Can't think of any Acura (except the 1.6EL) that came with rear drums...

Get some odysey rear drums Their gigantic and probably wouldn't even fit under a 15" wheel.

Hey, you 'mericans had a 1st gen CRV that came in only 2WD (they did not bring the wanna be CRV's to Canada )

Anybody know what the rear suspension looks like on one of those. Did they use an outer cv joint stuffed in there anyways? (like on the newer FWD Elements) This would make the rear suspension the same as the 4WD and therefor not usable for my purpose.

I think it looks just like a FWD Civic; don't claim to be an expert

Doh, just answered my own question.

The rear suspension of the 2WD CRV and the 4WD CRV look identical to each other. Except in the 2WD version the outer portion of the CV joint isn't attached to anything on the inside. Man does that look goofy from underneath (hey...where did the rest of the axle go? )

get a civic rear assembly and try to attached the ITR hub to the where the civic hub attached too...and then mabey drill the brake drum for 5 x 114....i don't see how you can't make that happen....even if you have to make a custom hub it should be feasible..

but i dream alot.

Were any of the Prelude's available with drum rears? I know at least the newer ones were the proper 5-bolt pattern.

Add cage, go racing, worry about brakes later if you actually need the weight advantage.

Here's another question: do you actually have 275lbs worth of stuff left to remove? If the car's already really stripped down (I don't think you listed the current weight, or the minimum weight of the rear disc class), it may not matter. And if you did, you could always suck it up and run just 4-lug rears and keep the 5-lug front. Sell a set of the 5-luggers, pick up a set of 4-luggers, not too big of a hassle even as far as actual mechanical work is involved.

You could try going down to "regular" Integra rear discs if that gives you some weight room to play with. Just drill the discs to 5 lug and you'll be fine. It's not like the rears get thermally cycled as severely as the fronts...

I'm going on a limb here but I think he is more worried about having to add 200+ pounds of ballast than trimming much more weight

talk to fastbrakes

The '03+ Accord rear drums seems to be your only alternative from Honda for 5-lug rear drums if you can't source the CR-V ones. I would try and find some CR-V rear drums or source another manufacturer.

On the subject of rear drums vs. discs . . . is there any advantage to upgrading to disk from drum (my car currently has rear drums) other than ease of brake pad changes?

Not really. You'd have to weigh them to see if there is a gain there.

possibly "feel" as well. the little cylinders in the drums wear over time and the pedal gets a little mushy.

Assuming one has new wheel cylinders and good shoes, it seems to me then that the only real benefits may be ease of maintenance and the weight factor (which may be negligable, however I've yet to see actual weights of both set-ups) by switching to a rear disc set-up.
