Interstate Riding
Its safer than street riding. Many people have an unwarranted fear of highway riding. But there is less chance of ******** killing you. The biggest thing is when passing people, especially larger cars/trucks/18wheelers, pass them as quickly as possible, dont linger around in their blind spot. Just be alert.
Stay out of the middle where oil and other junk builds up, I almost always go in the fast lane so I only have to worry about people merging from one side. You get used to it pretty fast.
Stay away from floppy gear. My textile jacket is fine, but my leather (not a riding jacket) is so loose in the arms, I hit 74 mph and it starts wackin me in the back of the arms, makes it tingle for hours.
I've put in a lot of highway miles... usually about 500 a week. The only thing that still really worries me is a flat at those speeds. Other than that, listen to what everybody else has said.
If you're taking a long trip, I recommend stopping as often as necessary, like at gas stations or to eat. Even just to stretch. Being tired can sneak up on you really fast.
And bring extra ear plugs.

great advice in this thread....
glad you made it out ok. once you get more comfortable with the speed, start thinking about working over to the fast lane. being in the slow lane means your vulerable to people suddenly realizing they are about to miss their exit and they will cut in front of you. people have been killed this way.
brief summary:
- earplugs if its a long ride.
- try to stay in the fast lane, you have an out if someone comes into your space
- try not to stay in the middle of the lane where the oil is, i prefer in between their tire and the middle, so your brakelights dont line up with theirs (so the person behind you sees that you're there when you mash the brakes)
- if everyone stops suddenly, think about splitting lanes or taking the shoulder so you dont become a hood ornament - WATCH YOUR MIRRORS
- dont follow too close, you wont see that piece of debris/tire that the car straddled but you need to swerve around.
- DO NOT FOLLOW LARGE TRUCKS. they will kick up all kinds of rocks and ****, not to mention stuff falling off of them. large trucks can suck up large items that are laying flat, like sheets of plywood - seen it.

watch out for cops too i know they are bad in harrisburg area not sure about hershey. its easy to speed on the highway just keep track of ur speed...! just be aleart and u will be fine...also make sure u have enough gas nothing would be worse then running out of gas on the highway
I did some decent riding today in rural Virginia. I rode 66 miles to be exact today, that was my longest ride ever. Here is the route I took:
Went from Harrisonburg to Port Republic to Grottoes to Waynesboro and then back to Grottoes and over to Weyers Cave and back to Harrisonburg.
Went the fastest I ever have--->80 mph.
Just to let you all know there is some great riding out here near JMU, if y'all ever want to get away from the hustle and bustle of NOVA or some other busy VA area. The riding was perfect and definitely gave me a lot of time to think.....

lanespitting is illegal; lanesharing is not.

OK....so whats the difference? is lane sharing illegal anywhere? is that 2 bikes riding side by side?

Lane splitting is where you are switching back and forth between two lanes to get through traffic.
Lane sharing is where you remain in one lane and share the space with any vehicles in your lane.
So, passing on the right, while still within the same lane, is legal. Switching over to the next lane to pass, then back, would be splitting.
Cali is wack, just look at our Governator...
