my brother and i are going to be purchasing our first bike very soon(05 yamaha r6) we have both signed up for the MSF and purchased proper riding gear (helmets, gloves, leathers etc..). i have read through the stickies (which were very helpful), but i still have a question.
1. am i retarded for starting out on an 05 r6? i mean im 6'2 190 pounds and i am very confident that i will be a safe rider and respect the power of the bike.. but when i was reading through the stickies alot of people said that begginers should start out on older bikes because they will be dropped. but isnt that what insuarance is for?

I just bopught my first bike tonight its a 99 900RR i know its not new but i feel it a good start. i also will be taking the bike class this weekend. all my buddies have taken it and say it makes all the differance.
dont worry about anyone telling you not to get a new bike get what you want and rock it.
and yes you have to respect the bike and watch out for old people
good luck

so am i doing things right as far as preparing my self? should i be doing anything else to set my self up for the bike besides the msf course? ive been reading up alot, and talking to alot of other riders. i just want to have an idea of what i am getting into. i am not scared i just want to be prepared. does that sound dumb.. but as far as my brother goes i am a little worried he is taking this less seriously than i am

i think it will be okay. we both have cars of our own, this will be our toy. my brother is a few years older and is co-signing for me. technicaly it will be my bike but he will be helping out with the insurance and he will ride it. i think the hardest thing to overcome will be deviding up the time between the both of us to ride the bike.

Take the MSF and then you two should split the costs of a $1500 250 ninja. Ride that for a 1000 miles so the basics become muscle memory, you can each even drop it once for good measure because "every rider goes down".
Easily sell it for $1400 2000 miles later or if wait for the right buyer you can break even or make some money off of it. You each loose $50 and gain valuable experience that most likely will save your new R6 when you get it and maybe even your life.
Then you can step up to 600 with a bit more confidence and the ability to concentrate on throttle control instead of being overwhelmed by trying to do everything at once.
Just my 2 cents...

Frame sliders should take most of the damage. As far as insurance goes, if you're ok, and the bike damage is minimal, just keep it to yourself. Probably won't be worth reporting it.

I could never share something like that. And it would suck if one of you guys dropped it, id be pissed if my brother messed up my brand new bike. I think it may start some conflict, but if you can pull it off than more power to you.

My "toy" is the reason I have driven my car twice in two weeks
I personally would do exactly what I did again. Bought an 89 EX500 for 1000 bucks, rode the **** out of it. Sold it, then bought my '03 ZX6R.

word... no matter what.... i dont care what most people say the bike will eventually get dropped.. even if its parked it will fall over, it happens.... physics is against you with a first bike,.... im not saying ur gonna crash it, but theres good chance it will fall over... yes thats what insurance is for... but can you afford 3g's a year in insurance to cover a tiny mishap? ehhhh ride a ******* for 2k miles and learn the basics... and let it fall over.. see what parts cost... new bike parts are WAYYYYY more expensive than an old cruiser will be... price out brake levers, clutch levers, rear sets...etc on a new r6....... as for sharing... a new r6 will run you about 9 out the door, why not go buy 2 f3's so u dont have to share
just my opinion..... the person i quoted "reborngsr" i believe, is a genius.... i bet he's speaking from experience.. i know my first bike fell over when i was learning.. had it been a new bike i would have cried... and my g/fs dad will never let me live it down that the bike i dropped didnt upset me, but had i bought a new r6 and dropped it... he would have been like "i told you so" either way do what you want, but go easy and respect it.... lol i am such a hypocrit..... but hey its how we learn....
take care... keep posting if you have any questions.....
EDIT: dont drop it and report it and make my insurance go up
j/p best of luck
