Thanks to my shiny new motor from SBMS racing, tuning by J/E Import Performance, and bodywork from Loudoun Autobody, we got the car out for MARRS 1 at Summit Point. Although 70deg+ for the practice day on Friday, we experienced some rain, some sleet and some snow with temps as low as 40deg when the first flag fell Sunday AM.
The sun was shining for the ITA/ITB race, however, and I was on the pole w/ Brett De Pedro's Miata right next to me and Kirk Dohne's 240SX right behind. There were 37 other cars behind us. Brett is a multiple Spec Miata champion (and former ITA RX7 driver) and Kirk won the MARRS ITA championship last year.
I'll keep it short and let the video speak for itself.
http://www.ginsberg.org/video/marrs05/m1/htl.wmv (right click / Save As please)
I kept the file small (4.7mb) but I only have a 768K upstream DSL so please be kind if it gets dog slow.

well, I'd say it was a *******, but on the bright side: you didn't break anything, you were still shiny side up, and the engine was still running. Coulda been worse, eh?
"How not to win a race" I started cringing... Glad to see it wasn't a serious mistake!
Hey G, how'd you manage with the rest of the race? How many spots were you able to regain?
If you get some time I'd love to see more video, please. :D

Probably a combo of cold tires and watching my mirror 90% of the time from T2 down through the chute.
The rest of the video is pretty impressive. I moved back up through the field and finished 7th overall. There was a nice oil slick in 6B for the last two laps and a ton of traffic going under the bridge, thru T10 and heading for home otherwise I probably wouold have finished 5th. I was right on the bumper of P6 who was on the bumper of P5.
Although Bret did come away w/ the new ITA record (1:28.18) he no doubt did it w/ a nice clear track. I turned a 1:28.333 on one of 15 traffic-filled laps.

Well that sucked.. Too bad you couldn't squeeze your way in there mid pack instead of at the end!
O ya.... with SCCA do you only race one race per weekend? vs. Nasa 2 races.

It depends on the particular race. For example MARRS 2 and 3 are during the same weekend at VIR in May.

Well, when I was little, my parents and I were driving back home from NYC. We stopped off at the Hyatt Regency in Cherry Hill, NJ where they had a combination delicatessen / chinese restaurant.
The name?
Ginsburg & Wong's.
Yeah, I know. It's spelled wrong for both of us. Anyways, at least I've never wiped out on the pace lap (yet).
Here's a very compressed version of the entire race...that's right--35mb for 24min of video hilarity

I can't speak about any other SCCA region but at the WDCR's MARRS series, we have over 300 entrants (close to 400 for the Labor Day Double--three days, two races) and nine race groups. There's really only enough time to give two qualifying sessions and a race to each group over the weekend before the workers revolt and the sun goes down.
How many race entrants and groups does NASA Mid-A have in a weekend?
Even when not in the car, there's a LOT of racing to watch.

Depends upon what kind of car you drive and what weekend.
In the Southeast there are almost always AT LEAST 2 races for IT cars, sometimes 3.
Last month at VIR one could have run the SARRC sprint race (30 minutes), the Carolina Cup Pro Series Race (45 minutes) AND the ECR (90 minutes) all in one weekend.
There are typically 250 to 300 race entries on these weekends and 7 or 8 race groups. Groups can be as big as 80 cars at VIR.

Not looking for a battle here but the last time I remember a HC race @ Summit being more that 12laps was HooptieFest '03. Since NASA-MA needs to keep strict adherence to a schedule, most race groups are limited to 20min (incl. pace lap). Let's see, after pace lap and standing start that comes to ~17min of track time. Now let's assume there are no black flags, and no full-course cautions.
WDCR runs 16 laps or 40min, whichever's completed first. I've never seen the time limit hit (though it certainly may have)
I'll take my one 16-lap race vs. two 8-lappers which are over before they begin.
How long is a Pro-IT race at Road-Atl, Catch? 20 laps, right?

20 laps or 45 minutes.
The VIR Enduro was a 10 minute practice, 15 minute qualify and 90 minute race for $225. Thats nearly 2 hours of seat time.
We're running the daytona ECR (over 2 hours of seat time) next weekend... $235 including a NASCAR garage assignment.
But the ARRC is the greatest of them all. In one weekend you *could* run the championship sprint race (45 minutes), Pro IT (45 minutes), and Enduro (3 hours). With all the attached practice and qualifying sessions it comes up to almost 6 hours of seat time.
Hardly anybody actually does ALL of the available races. Its just too much.

Nice bit of driving Gregg. Excellent job with being patient with the Volvo going uphill at T9 (T8 depending on your #ing system).
As I was watching the vid, I realized I wasn't breathing.
Thanks again for posting the video.

I realized I wasn't breathing either about the time I almost lost it at T3, having just passed Charlie Broring's Black/Red Volvo.
BTW-There are apparently photos of my stupidity
thanks to Jim Sykes @ Motorsports Imaging.

Starting here:

Would be about where I would have stopped breathing. It didn't look that close in the video, but in this photo, it looks pretty close.
Definitely... nice photos!

Those are double race weekends over three days so you have to take an extra day off from work, pay for one more night at a motel and eat out one more night with an entry that is $285 ($45) more than a run of the mill NASA weekend.
Peace,
C
