Default Rules on having titles for track only cars....

Hi, I was wondering if there is anything regarding having titles for the cars you use for track/race only days.

Does Honda Challenge ask for a title before you can race or can you just race without one?

I found an empty shell in my friend's shop that has been sitting there for 4 years and it doesnt have a title because the previous owner basically abandoned it.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

No, they dont require a title. But the car does have to have 2 valid vin's that match up. I didn't get checked for the vin's with NASA, but SCCA is not as forgiving.

No title needed for most (if not all) race series. VIN tags on chassis are sometimes used to verify model/trim/year (typically in Stock and IT type classes).

Just make sure that the shop owner processes it as abandoned properly to avoid any future problem with the original owner.

Thanks guys.

The shop owner actually tried to get a title from the bank, but the bank doesnt want to let the lien go.

Im not sure if that is going to cause any problems down the road, if the bank decides to take it.

Eek. Not sure I'd touch the car if there is still a lien on it. That's asking for trouble down the road.

have somebody from the bank check it out....

if its a shell, they might just call it a complete loss since there is no market value for it. they will not want to deal with it, as it will cost them money, even to tow it somewhere

you might be able to get a salvage title then. its always a good idea to have the title....if there is a lein on the vin number, dont touch it! if the bank wants it, its theirs, no matter how much money in parts you have in it....its all theirs.

Call the bank! They can and will reposes the car if they find it,.and if they find out you have the car they can/will sue you for it!

if its been at your friends shop have him get a mechanics lien then call the bank.

If your buddy has had the shell at his shop for four years, he can probably "charge" "storage fees" for the four years and get a mechanic's lien on the car as well.. it may further encourage the bank to give it up for a total loss...

I definitely would not want to expose myself to a pissed-off bank looking for some pockets it can yank some money out of.. ymmv.

DEFINITELY get a title. Proves clear ownership. Ever get stopped by the man and he asks you who ownes the car on the trailer? ANd wants you to prove it? Oh! No title with you, not a problem, I'll run the VIN in the computer. Hey Boy! The XXXX Bank owns that car and they want it back. You can onload it right here on your way to the magistrate.

Well, VIN's can't be all that important. A guy I race with races a Nissan NX2000 that used to be a factory built race car, it does not even have a vin. Actually, a 240SX team I used to crew for had another factory car that came complete without a vin as well (was originally built as just a white body (bare unibody)) I have never seen any prob with either of these two cars.....

The BIG difference is a chassis that never had a VIN issued and one that did. The chassis that never had a VIN issued never had a loan againts it either.

So basically the previous owner of the hatch might still owe money to the bank..and thats why the bank doesnt want to let it go?

Might just pass up on it then...unless we can get a salvage title on it.

Correct. There is an outstanding loan and the bank has the title.
