MONEY SHIFTED ITR !!! Red-lining at 3rd and downshifted into 2nd !!
Heres the Cliff notes of the story... I let my friend drive my ITR
, yeah I know. As he was redlining in 3rd gear, he tried to upshift to 4th gear, missed the gate and threw it into 2nd. He let go of the clutch and the rest is history... I saw the tach jump pass redline into 9500 rpm !!!
The car was running after that and for the next 200 feet or so I heard a loud ticking noise !! The car was then immediately pulled over and towed away to Tustin Acura, where it now rests and I await the diagnostic. Most likely they said I am looking at 3-4 blown valves, just from what I said and the noise they hear. Minimum of $1400 and maximum of $2200 if it is just a valve job.
Anyone else been in this money shifted position ?? What do you suggest I do in terms of repair ?? Has anyone had their car fixed after this problem and still had it persist ??

fix it, thats all you can do. if the problems persist after the repair, then it wasn't repaired right. many people have done what your friend did.

And this is why only myself and my girlfriend (rarely and she wont even go past 3500) drive my car. It's just not worth it. I almost lost my GS-R while a friend was driving it. He had never experienced torque steer and the car jumped over on him and he barely missed the parked car. Learn from this lesson and don't let anyone drive your car.
do it yourself if you know how and it wont cost nearly that much. Valves are gonna run you around $30 a piece (depending on current price)...and the rest will just be your time. Dealerships will always rape you...

I suggest you have your friend pay for it.

Been there. I had a "friend" put my wheel on and tighten lugs in a circle pattern and strip the threads holding the back of the lug to the hub. Had to have the hub replaced because the threads were gone off the hub, so a new lug just spun around in the hole. Ended up getting my wheel scratched when it was taken out too. About $650 in damages.

I just fixed my head for around $1000.00. I did not mis-shift, but I needed a couple new valves. I did all the work myself. Definatly saved some coin.
Now its never run better

They sell OEM valve sets on eBay brand new for like $100 or $110 for 8 of them. I think they come in intake and exhaust sets.
yeah the dealership is gonna rape you... but I had the same misfortune... although I was not so lucky went from 3rd to 2nd tach went past 10K dropped a valve in every cylinder, melted a valve to the top of piston #1 piston #2 had huge hole in it... #3 was MIA/KIA and #4 had a hole... sound's like you should come out a little better than I did as long as you get it away form the dealership and save yourself some money...
wow some friend loll o well.. lesson learnt
hope it doesnt turn out too bad for ur R...btw ive never driven car before but i sorta dont understand how u can miss going to 4th and end up in 2nd.. i mean its straight down lol but meh what do i know never driven car

yea that must have no sounded good in the car...i remember when i had my Hatch i was racing my boys 99 SI and he redlined top of 3rd and slammed it into 2nd by accident and he said the needle went crazy at 8200 and the car just shut off by itself not turning on again...when letting a friend drive ur car ur running a huge risk i always say...but sorry man about what happened hope ur ARR gets back on its feet repaired perfectly
Wow, don't let your friend drive. mistakes happen though. That didn't quite happen to my engine but I did let an old engine run hard and ended up with a hole the size of my fist in the block. Yeah I blew the block but hah, it has a new heart now. Sorry to hear about the over rev. Could always do the work yourself and save the hassle. Dealerships always overcharge. Lol you could always buy a new valve train and valves and have a machine shop do it =P
Good luck jeff,

Exactly. You'll also need a new head gasket. Depending on how many miles are on the motor you may want to do the timing belt also. That price from the dealership seems very high. Good luck.

Sigh... that is the problem with letting friends "drive" a car they are not used to...
I don't know about really ripping into someone elses car like that I mean 3rd gear @ 8500 = 90mph
Atleast if it was you, you'd probably notice the split-second that you started releasing the clutch and probably could have saved it (or minimized damage by quite a large margin) by putting the clutch back down right then. (saved my own a$$ once a while back like that)

At that price, I'd imagine they'd be milking you pretty bad... you can get a brand new pre-assembled head OEM for $1400... (probably what they'd be doing if they charge you $2200). Might want to investigate that route if you (or your friend
) are spending that much already

The stealership will own you if you keep it there.
Tell your friend that you gladly accept money orders, cash or cashiers checks only. His stupidity should be paid for by his own wallet. Not only is this the responsible thing to do, he also chose to drive your car and bounce third gear off the rev limiter then shift like an asshat. *shrug. Good luck with the rebuild. Might as well throw in some other goodies while your at it. high compression pistons *cough *cough....

It takes at least TWO different errors to accomplish a money shift:
1) Putting the shift lever in the wrong gear
2) Failing to do anything about it (i.e. putting the clutch pedal back in) in time, when seeing the revs start shooting up past redline.
So that's like asshat squared.
