Default Painting your car yourself?

OK So if you were to paint your car yourself how would you do it? Can you make a paint booth out of vinyl? Like lay that clear warehouse vinyl on the floor, walls celing and add a fan for ventilation and whala? Paintbooth?

Also, what is a good med-grade sprayer i can get from advanced auto? It seems like for the price of all the equipment I could do it myself? It also doesnt seem to complicated to spray a car, more like a practive of patience than anything truely difficult.

Im just trying to lay down some fresh black on my car. Can you guys give me some tips? Also what would u recommend for prepping the old paint? Just some scuffing or a full out sanddown? And for the tiny dings, do i just use bondo and then sand smooth?

Thanks so much

yes, you can make a booth with plastics on the walls. for ventilation just use box fans with furnace filters on them. you will need at least 2 intake and 2 exhaust fans. box fans run around 20-30 bucks. as for cost of tools and supplies this could really get expensive and may not justify painting the car yourself unless your planning on painting more cars down the line. your going to need several guns. 1 for primer, 1 for primer sealer, and 1 for base and clear. most don't use the same gun for base and clear though but you can. depending on the guns you choose you will need a compressor that can put out the cfm requirements of them. most guns require 10 cfm and above. a compressor that can provide that will cost you. if you can find cheap knock of guns that has low cfm ratings at like 7 cfm than you could probably get away with using a small $300 compressor. guns can range between $30-$500 each. compressors can range from $200 and up. after buying your guns and compressor you will still need comsumables like many different grits of sandpapers, scuffing pads, primer, filler, poly filler, laquer thinner, wax grease remover, tack rags, block sanders, tape, masking paper, etc... all of this stuff will run you a couple of hundred bucks. also if your planning on shooting clear you will need an air line respirator which will run you no less than $400. clear is catalyzed and when mixed it's by product is isocynates which is very harmful and can cause you lots of problems once your sensatized to it. there is no respirator that will filter this when not sprayed in a professional paint booth certified by osha. only an air line respirator will keep you safe from this stuff. now you've seen the cost so far but you haven't even bought the paint yet. quality brand paints will run your between $500-$800. also if your planning on buffing the car you will need a buffer, buffing pads, rubbing compounds, 1000 grit, 1500 grit, 2000 grit sandpaper. i hope i didn't scare you with all this but you really need to consider the cost before you get into this. there's a lot of things to buy to paint a car and it's not cheap. i've spent a lot of money for all my equipment which is way more than any oem 2 stage paint job. just my guns and compressor alone is over well over 2 g's. so unless your gonna get into painting as a hobby it will probably be cheaper to get it done at a body shop.

19civic93..... nice

You talk about cfm, how do you keep the pressure constant and how much of a difference in the paint quality will there be between 10 and 7 cfm..

Also is there a different technique when painting bumpers or lips, how do you keep them from chipping so easily...

I'm a noob

if you gun uses more cfm than the compressor can put out you will eventually run out of air and have to wait for the compressor to build back up. you might be able to get away with it. just keep an eye on the amount of air you have left cause you don't want to starve your gun. that will cause problems with the atomization of the paint. also because your compressor will be running all the time there is a very high chance that a lot of condensation will build up in the tank causing water to get into the air lines. make sure you have an inline filter on your gun.

I've read somewhere many moons ago, that you can somehow connect two compressors or something together to supply air longer, for those of us who don't have 100 gallaon compressor?

dam... thats the best sum-it-all-up-in-a-nutshell that i've seen. and u hit the target with ur numbers too. i just dropped right at $800 on painting my ef... *ouch*

lets not forget technique either... just cuz u buy all the right equipment, you cant just pour it in the can and start spraying.. different guns require different psi's, spray distance, some things u spray dryer, others u spray wetter..

yes, you can do that and it does work but not as good as a large compressor. you need to run check valves on the output on each compressor to prevent back flow. then to a 2 to 1 manifold. the compressors will probably be running all the time while spraying which put you in the risk of water in the lines. make sure you have good water traps and filters before the gun.
