Transmissions Questions
my 98 auto prelude transmissions is out..only the reverse is working..what do i need to do before replacing it? ...what's the best thing do? get a new one? get a used one? or refix "if it can be"? and what's the price range? thanks in advance
Lot's of choices for this one. Mine would be to get a remanufactured one from Howard Engineering. They do come with a warranty. If you go with the tranny swap-be prepared to have a mismatched VIN; that affects resale value. I assume you are not the original owner of the car and do not know when the tranny was last serviced. I would start with a full flush and ifll if there is any forward gear left. Have a Honda dealer go over the box for codes and get an estimate from them. you will find that the replacement will be close to $3000 this way using a rebuilt tranny from either Honda or Howard. It is possible to save some cash by going to an independent or using a slavaged one-but you really should get a warranty for peace of mind if anything.
Do a search on this and other places for this subject. There is a lot about it out there. Honda has extended its warranty for older Preludes (97-98) to 100K miles. You may be eligible for Honda Care on your problem. Again visit a dealer about your problem.
