Default Tire Shipping

What company do you use to ship your tires? I have about 6 tires and 4 of them are mounted that need to be sent to Cali, and I am in Ohio, Do you box them up or just wrap them up with some plastic?

Well if they are just tires by themselves, band 'em up and ship 'em UPS.

If they are mounted on wheels already, you will probably want to, if not have to box them up. Unless the person doesn't care if the wheels look like **** when they get them.

Any particular criteria like cost, etc?
Fed Ex Ground seems to work well.

I've used Greyhound before. The recipient has to be willing to pick them up at the bus station though.

On a similar note ... my first response was to suggest USPS (as a joke).

Default Re: Tire Shipping (zygspeed)

I have shipped tires and wheels before.

In my experience, FedEx Ground is as reliable as anybody and cheaper than anyone else. They call it "FedEx Ground" if it's shipped to a business, "FedEx Home Delivery" if it's shipped to a residence. More advantages of FedEx: You can ship it from any FedEx office for the same low fee, and they have FedEx offices all over the place. (By comparison, UPS charges more to ship from one of their former "Mail Boxes" locations than from the UPS Customer Counter, which still costs more than FedEx, and there are very very few UPS Customer Counters around.) If you want, you can set up an account with FedEx really easily using the internet and print out your shipping labels on your computer, then just drop the stuff off.

If I'm shipping unmounted tires, I use heavy duty strapping tape to band two of them together as a single item. (This isn't regular packing tape, but rather, tape with reinforcing filaments in it. You can get it at any Staples, Office Max, Office Depot, etc.) Not all the way around, but in 3-4 locations around the tires. Then I wrap clear packing tape over the shipping label and around the two tires (not the entire circumference of the tires, just the part where the shipping label is).

If I'm shipping tires mounted on wheels, I cut out a couple large disk-shaped pieces of cardboard, larger than the wheels but smaller than the outer diameter of the tires, and tape them over each side of each wheel/tire combo. Regular packing tape, all the way around, to totally seal the edges of the cardboard. I ship each wheel/tire combo as a package.

The only time I use boxes is when I'm shipping wheels, no tires.

So, if I had four tires mounted on wheels and two unmounted tires, I would ship them as five pieces (four separate wheel/tire pieces and one piece of two unmounted tires strapped together).

One more tip, based on personal experience: Think carefully when deciding how much to insure them for. More specifically, let's say a set of four wheels/tires is worth $800. If you insure them for $200 each, it's possible that they might lose one and you would be stuck with $200 cash and three wheels/tires. If this would **** you off because it would cost more to find a singleton wheel and tire to match, then you might consider insuring the wheels/tires for more than that.

You can estimate shipping rates for your location and theirs on the websites for FedEx, UPS, Greyhound, etc. I find that within the country, it's usually around $5-8 for a single unmounted tire (typically ~20 pounds), $10-20 for two tires or a wheel/tire combo (~35-40 pounds).

I shipped two Falkens to Catch 22 from NC to GA via Fed Ex ground two weeks ago and they disappeared. I'm filing a claim. 22 and I joked that a Fed Ex dock worker now has two used Azenis on his slammed Civic now, Yo.

I hate it for 22, but I'll come out pretty good...they were insured for twice what I sold them for.

you better get a fake receipt and keep in mind that fedex doesnt pay you out for the shipping cost!

I shipped a gauage cluster that they squashed. They paid me the sale price but no shipping/handling.. So make sure you have some proof to show you paid more OR say it was a gift and there was no money changed hands..

I use FEDEX ground often.. but I dont like it.. Its just cheap!

I use FedEx Ground often, and I've never had any problems with it. UPS is a different story.

FedEx Ground (like UPS) automatically includes insurance for a value of $100 with all packages. You only have to pay extra for higher coverage.

another nice thing about Fedex is that they bought Kinko's, so you can send anything Fedex Ground at those retail stores which are lot more plentiful than actual Fedex locations, and not as unreliable as mailbox etc.

**DO NOT Use UPS**. They have a shipping surcharge they'll ding you with for shipping tires that are not boxed. This surcharge never appears until it's manually added by the ding dong at the Customer Counter. It's another $8-9 per tire. Got zapped by them a couple weeks ago on it.

Never saw it on their website, but they were happy to show me a brochure outlining the ridiculous surcharge when I complained. UPS

i've used fedex ground to ship tires and rims to cali...and some other various items across the US and Canada....never had any problems with them and they were the cheapest out of ups and dhl

what i did with the rims and tires is i used two thick cardboard pieces on each side of the wheel (to protect the rim...the tire can protect itself) and just taped the **** out of it...arrived fine to the buyer

if you are shipping 4 rims+ tires, it'll be about 80-100 dollars...another +2 empy tires will be about 20 dollars

:guilty look:

I took a set (three of them, unmounted) to "The UPS Store" and paid them to deal with the whole thing. I think it cost me like 40 bucks including the plastic around them and everything.

Places like that charge you for shipping materials and for wrapping it up, and then they charge higher UPS shipping rates than the UPS Customer Counter. It's certainly easier to let them do everything, but it's also more expensive.

ive shipped a set of tires thru FedEx and i remember it cost HALF as much as UPS. UPS cant be worth it.

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=840890

how i package it is wrapping them in pairs side by side with regular packing tape with a few rings looping inside/outside of the tire. THEN, i use saran wrap to wrap the two together completely around.

sorry to hear the azenis were lost in shipping. i just think that crap happens, no matter the company.

Yes. (The math calculation shows it might be more like 23x23x9 but it's close either way.)

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by trigun7469 &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">the lowest amount per tire was $14, Is that as cheap as it gets?</TD></TR></TABLE>

Yes.

When I go to the FedEx website and check a shipment from ZIP 44120 to 90210 (nice places ) weighing 19 pounds measuring 22x22x9, it gives me a rate of $14.41 for shipping FedEx Ground (to a business address), including insurance for $100.

Not according to their website.

When I go to the DHL website and check a shipment from ZIP 44120 to 90210 weighing 19 pounds measuring 22x22x9, it gives me a rate of $18.46 for shipping DHL Ground (to a business address), including insurance for $100. That compares with $14.41 via FedEx Ground.
