Complete Electrical Failure on old 1983 CM250
Hi all,
Sorry for being rude and asking a question for my first post. But I have been searching the web for some time for some info on my bike's problem with out much luck. Maybe you can help?
I own a 1983 Honda CM250C, the bike was working fine, I had a couple of times where it did not seem to rev when the throttle was open, but this only happened for a moment, after I had just started the bike and then it would go fine, I just assumed that it was because it was cold. Then one morning, I started it as normal let it idle for about 2 min, I got about 500m up the road and it started to have trouble (No revs, I gave it some throttle and it tried to go, but then it stalled, I was able to start it a couple of times but it would just stall, after about 3 or 4 sec. Doing this about 3 times I got it to go and I made it the 500m back home and I turned it off. About 5min later I tried starting it but it would not turn over. A few days later I took the spark plugs out and they were a little fouled (Black oil) I cleaned them with a bit of sand paper, I tried to start it again but it would not start, as if the battery was flat, it only had about 10.5volts. I removed the battery, undoing the negative terminal first. I put in on the charger over night, the next day I tested the battery with a multi meter and it had nearly 13volts. I put it back on the bike, positive terminal first, I’m sure that I did not short it. I then turned the kill switch off and turned the key. The neutral light did not come on, I held the clutch in and hit the starter, I got absolutely nothing, and it did not even try to turn over as before. I had no power at the switches, Indicators, light etc. I checked the terminals, and all electrical connections I could get to, all seemed good. There is 3 fuses’ (That I could find) on the bike I checked them and all were not blown. I still had no power what so ever. I tested with my multi meter if power was getting to the fuse’s and there was only 12volts on one when the key was turned on, the other two fuse’s had no power on either side weather on or off.
Anyway, that is what is happening. Any suggestions?
I am not sure if the CDI unit is causing/or can cause the complete electrical failure, but after doing the CDI unit test and getting the wrong results as in the workshop manual I have assumed it is causing the problem.
Thank You

If the CDI has gone then it can stop the bike from starting, but if there is no neutral light I would assume that this isnt you only issue. Try the brake light, if nothing you might have a short. Maybe in the loom itself. Test the earth point, its easy to run a new one to the frame straight from the battery negative. Try the battery on something else, see if it can stand a load? I would get a new battery to rule it out, or run a car battery to it that you know is good. It hasnt got a kill switch off the stand has it, they are pain in the ***. Even if the CDI is knackered the starter should spin and you should have lights. Get that bit sorted and then it will be easier to diagnose the starting issue.
