Removing the HVAC from under-dash in an EP3 Civic Si?
Workin on the GRM Civic Si project car, it's going in for a cage this weekend at Kirk. Thinking about pulling the HVAC stuff from the dash, but it's pretty convoluted in there, not sure if getting to the unit is worth the trouble at this point, and I'd kind of like to have the defogger operational, but I figured it doesn't hurt to ask if anyone's done this before. Some of us are not allowed to completely remove the system due to the ITA and HC rulesbooks. With that said-you can remove the guts of the AC part by taking out the coupler between the blower and heater housing and removing the Condensor there. The underhood part is obvious. The weight reduction is on the order of 50 pounds. If you elect to remove the plenuum with the AC coil-you will have to find the original part-so just plug up the holes with duct tape. The firewall has 2 rubber plugs that the AC uses-these can be ordered from a dealer or yard and are needed once everything is gone-I went to the yard for mine and the replacement connector from a non-AC car. You will also lose a bit of weight when you take the AC fan out. Our CRX is all set to defrost on a cool morning at The Glen and elsewhere. In the afternoon I do have the control unit set to blow only when on the grid. To remove the heater assemby is more involved and as you suggest may not be to your advantage-you do get an extra radiator

Well I can think of one suggestion, although not specific to the car. Before you tear all that stuff out of there, make sure the vents are set to the defrost ones. That way if you just keep the blower and ductwork, you can still demist the windshield.
Most of the racers here just use Rain-X on the outside and Rain-X Anti-fog on the inside of the windshield. I'm not sure if that works as well in wet climates, but it seems to do the job here. FWIW.

JC836, is there an IT rule about the HVAC? It looks to me like it's okay in Honda-Challenge, but the more stuff the car is legal for the better, the cage is being built to conform to SCCA and NASA. I've left it in, and just cut as much of the foam padding out as possible. That stuff is pretty dense, I'm eager to weigh the stuff that came out of the car.
Thanks for the quick answers!
