One Lap of America
One Lap of America is coming up, and I will be participating in it again this year, along with 80-90 others. I will try to update this post as I go so you guys can keep track.
On the Honda front there will be a couple of CRXs it seems and a couple of NSX-Rs.
I will be abandoning my honda brothers for this event though, and running the AMS Lancer Evolution VIII in Mid Priced sedan class.
AMS is a tuner out of Chicago and has the fastest non nitrous Evo VIII, running 10.11@141. In drag trim it puts down 711 whp, but I will be piloting the roadrace version which "only" puts down 547whp.
The best part is in roadrace trim they game me what I asked for, which is range, and we see full boost and 400whp @3700rpm. (redline and peak HP is 8000rpm)
Exedy Clutches, Stoptech brakes and Bridgestone have stepped up to help us out, and we are stuffing 285/30/18s under the fenders.
One Lap Schedule:
April 30th
Tire Rack Skidpad: South Bend, IN
Indianapolis Raceway Park: Indianapolis, IN
May 1st
BeaveRun Motorsports Complex: Wampum, PA
Lancaster Motorsports Park: Lancaster, NY (asphalt oval)
May 2nd
New Hampshire International SpeedwayLouden, NH
May 3rd
Summit Point Raceway: Summit Point, WV
Mason-Dixon Dragway: Hagerstown, MD
May 4th
Virginia International Raceway: Alton, VA
May 5th
Roeblig Road Raceway: Bloomingdale, GA
May 6th
Nelson Ledges: Warren, OH
May 7th
Tire Rack Skid Pad: South Bend, IN
If you are nearby the tracks and event people are usually really good at letting people in to spectate, so come out and cheer the Hondas on.. or me if you feel like cheering for a Mitsubishi..

Nice, running four tracks that I know! Doing BeaveRun, and that oval in NY on the same day should be interesting though...
Good luck and have fun!

Sick power curve. Have a dyno chart? Which turbo is that, something small-ish I presume...
If you venture over to NSX Prime's forums, there's at least one member there running, likely the same group you're referring to.

Hmm .... so I guess by "One lap of America" they really mean "One lap of the Eastern United States."
Too bad you guys won't run anywhere within 1000 miles of me. I'd really like to see that series.

I dont have a dyno chart, I will ask him when i go to test this weekend if he will post one on the evom boards. The turbo is some hybrid thing, is a "smaller" turbo (still bigger than stock) but he changed the housing sizes to spool quicker, when I tested at Talladega GP he was looking at temps to see how small he could go.
This year is an "east coast" One Lap.. last year it was out west, the year before it was central/east. its pretty tough on both time and wallets to try to run both coasts.
I will say hi to Dave and Fay for you, looks like they are in my class in their Mazda 6..
It looks like only one NSX-R now though.. So i guess thats the group for those forums.

i think the 2004 was mostly western states..... they have to semi limit due to time.... you couldn't possibly hit california from the east coast and then get back to east coast in the normal 7-8 days.....

It's a whole lot of cross-country driving, that's for sure. Only a few laps per day racing.

This post is to anounce the EXP4/DAL Motorsports NSX entry into the 22nd running of the Car & Driver "Cannonball One Lap of America" held April 30th - May 6th, 2005.
There will be two highly modified, supercharged NSX's competing in the one week, 3,500 mile event that has the drivers competing in over 11 track events that include road courses, ovals, drag strips and skid pads.
DAL is combining efforts with Mike Fitzpatrick(Fitzpatrick Racing) to campaign both NSXs, both are being title sponsored by EXP4 Additives http://www.addexp4.com.
The two car teams consist of Vaughn Duarte/Rob Morrison and Mike Fitzpatrick/Tim Richardson. The team's One Lap of America race manager is Dallas's own Jon York, which has been instrumental in organizing sponsorship and coordinating team business.
Tackling day to day coverage of the event will be Mark Hicks-worlds foremost "NSX Nut" and Derek Bumpas South Central's http://www.dallasNSX.com web master, who will handle daily downloads and posting of updates/photos.
For exact track dates, visit
http://www.onelapofamerica.com
The famous One Lap of America is unlike any other event in the world. There are many cloned type events but only one Cannonball One Lap. The "Car & Driver" Cannonball Run will expand this annual event to include a future Cannonball Series which will consist of televised 25 lap sprints later this year.
Notes about this year’s One Lap:
1. The 22nd running of the 1 Lap will be filmed and shown on TNN & Speed on several occasions after editing and such is completed.
2. A DVD documentary will be filmed following the exploits of the 1 Lap NSX's to include preparation, running of and between track events over the 7 days and 3500 miles.
3. Daily downloads/status/write-ups will be available at http://www.addexp4.com for those that wish to follow the campaign.
DAL Motorsports is grateful for our other generous sponsors: Goodson Acura, Science of Speed, Mobil/Exxon, and Honda.jp

Yea, there were two of them on the entry list, but one is gone.. I was looking forward to seeing them run (as long as they are behind me :D)
Format works like this..
at the tracks, we do 2-3 time trials.. 3-4 laps each, from a standing start, combined time for laps counts. Some tracks we will be running different configurations.
VIR.. in the morning we do North Course/South Course, then in the afternoon we do full course..
Oval.. 3 laps, from a standing start
Drag race.. first a Low ET contest, then a bracket drag.
Skidpad, two laps in each direction, avg of the two laps, and avg of both for skidpad g.
So a day is like.. get to the track, walk the course, get the car ready (unpack) drive a time trial.. wait a few hours, drive another time trial, pack, head for the next event.
With Martin (car owner) and my dad going, I hope to pretty much relax in the back seat, play on the computer, listen to music, sleep.. etc.

Thanks Brian,
Its too bad we dont run Hallett this year, I loved that track and it would be at least a little closer to you. I htink Leh and Cory are going to come out to Roebling, so they should get some good pics.
At some point we are going to get together and play with that Porsche.

T-minus 5 days.
With only a week remaining we made good use of the weekend before One Lap.
Saturday I got to visit the AMS shop for the first time. cars, cars, more cars, fabrication equipment, parts, dyno, .. I wonder if Martin (the owner) would just let me set up a cot in there..
The stack of Bridgestone Potenza RE050 One Lap of America Tires.
The tours ended quickly and it was time to get to work on the car, we had to do the final engine installation work, mostly just connecting stuff, and I use the term "we" loosely. Martin and Justin worked, I stood there and took pictures, and played with the Vishnu diffuser. (which isn't on the car yet, so I cant speak about how it fits)
The Bridgestone 285/30/18s were on the car, and sitting on the lift it looked like a super modified with the tires sticking out..

The big question: "How much is it going to rub?"
Meanwhile.. its snowing outside.. the day before I was in SC and it was 86'
We get the car together and take it for a trip down the road, with two people in the back it was rubbing something fierce. sccchhheeecccc scccchhheeeechh every time we hit a bump. We got back to the shop and call in Carlos, the body shop guy, to roll the fenders. He isn't enthused. Select quotes are "I dont have the right tools" "These wheels are not supposed to be on this car"
So.. with Carlos into constructing and not destructing, its time to go dig through the scrap bin for the AMS widebody installation kit.

Once we had the kit it was time to see how much we were going to mess up the fenders. I was sure that this was where Martin would kick me out of the shop for wanting these tires, and I was going to find myself in the 30' Chicago evening with a t-shirt on.
But.. Martin jumps right in to help install the AMS widebody kit:

(Martin is turning the wheel, Justin is bending.. err, rolling the fender.)
You would be surprised how much abuse the Evo fenders will actually take, it took many many passes to get the right distance. (and actually a 2nd road trip where it was still rubbing)

Finally we had what we thought was a good amount of space, and it was time to go get some rest. We would meet at the track at 7am.
Day 2: Alfa Romeo Club track day at Autobahn Country Club in Joliet.
Agenda: Get some maps down, get the shocks set, see how the tires wear, make sure alignment is right.. etc.
Some cars that were there:

Some Lap Times:
Dodge Neon: 1:25
Ferrari 360: 1:18
Porsche GT3: 1:15.9
Lotus Exige: 1:14s
Nissan 350z (on R compounds) 1:13.9
Dodge Ram Tube frame truck: 1:13.6
AMS Evo VIII: 1:11.11
The car is amazingly comfortable, the Brigestone tires are a bit tricky when cold (under 100') but come in great and work well in the 120'-190' range. The OEM Advans I can go pretty much hot right away on, but they get greasy after 4-5 laps and I have to either relax to let them cool, or just drive them differently. With a long run of 14 laps on the 050's i never felt them get greasy, and I was trying. The StopTech brakes are PLENTY, I would love to actually push their limits with some r compounds, but the limiting factor with street tires was their braking level. (granted I was standing on them from straight line speed in the 120s, 130s and 115mph range. The 14 inch rotors are going to do well though, with 3 very hard and long braking zones in 1.5 miles, I never felt fade.. The buddy clubs performed well again, and as with the R compounds at the first session, they like to be run high in the adjustment range to settle the car and make it point and go through mid corner better, we are still working on a throttle on push, but the LSD is going in this week.
So we went home the fastest car on track, tires that still look brand new after 75 or so track miles, and a "hell yes!" trap speed of 138.6 mph on an 800 foot straight.
Our fender rolling? It works. Even with bumping over the curbs there was no rubbing at the track. (just ignore the little silver specs of paint on the shop floor)
I cant wait till next week.

Your secret is safe with us.
Anyhow, get some touch-up paint (and some rubberizing rust proof?) on those wheel wells whenever you have a spare moment. There's nothing like looking at rust stains on your pretty sportscar paint when the wheel wells start going on the inside.

We dont have to worry about rust on the front. (aluminum)
But yea, Martin (the car owner) right away put on his list a touch up deal to protect it. The primer stayed on though, so you really cant see the little chipping it did. I am sure he is going to make sure its safe for the future, he is very detail oriented like that. I will passon to him the rust proff stuff jsut in case he hasn't considered it.
Today he built a removable trailer hitch, rented a trailer from uhaul, set up a SCCA/SVRA legal firebottle, (drag racing seems to be less strict it seems) the diffuser goes on next.
After the test sunday I am really excited, car is just nasty.. 2nd gear is almost useless because it spins the tires.. and with 4 of them turning, it feels like its being drawn and quartered as they fight for grip..

If you are nearby the tracks and event people are usually really good at letting people in to spectate, so come out and cheer the Hondas on.. or me if you feel like cheering for a Mitsubishi..

sounds awesome...i keep hearing praise about ams from the evo and boost junkies around here...i always just thought they were the typical 1/4 tuner shop but looks like they know what they're doing though
Thanks guys,
AMS has been a drag only shop, this car had never even run anywhere but a dyno and down the strip till I rolled it onto Talladega Gran Prix in Feb. I was a little concerned at first, drag racers, never been road racing.. etc.. But.. Martin has been awesome. He has read and is getting an understanding of the differences between each, and has trusted me on the calls when people have told him "no way"
The biggest concept he got was the HP range, and really over delivered any expectations I had.. 400whp at 3700 rpm, with a 8k redline at 547whp... thats nuts.. (I have seen the Dyno chart, and he is going to try to post it, but it will probably be after One Lap cause things are so busy this week)
The other is he is trusting me, and other than the wheels, I am not taking any big chances, basic alignment, nothing crazy on springs (10k front and rear) But I jsut want a good basic package, something he can sell to his customers and they will be fine. Everyone he talked to told him "no way" on the wheels, and one company even told me "You will hate it, you wont be able to turn at slow speeds, the car will handle like crap" Martin has trusted me though, the tires are on the car, you see the fender rolling we did, and they work great..
I should have told the guy from the wheel company "with these tires their won't be any slow corners"
I am really looking forward to One Lap, and we are going to be doing some other stuff later such as the Car & Driver Series, and I hope some NASA Time trials and some Time Attacks.
its going to be fun to update you gus with what's going on.

Actually, two days prior it was in the 80's here (SE MI) as well, then snowed all day saturday and sunday... welcome to the midwest.
and for those complaining that one lap is too east-coast oriented - the guys at OTC have an answer: http://www.opentrackchallenge.com - 5 tracks in 5 days, all on the west coast.

I'm also entered in this year's One Lap as well. I abandoned my crazy boosted Civic setup that didn't make it to last year's event and I'm running a green '87 Mazda RX7 with a modded LS1 in it and some of the wider fenders known to man. It doesn't have 547 hp, but it can liquify the mountainous 335 rear tires at any speed.
If any one attends any of the events I'd be happy to give them a ride, or just feel free to stop by.
Thanks
Ben

It seems the Evo is the car to have for that event. It's fast, it's Fun, and you could take the bake seats out and put a little bed back there. That way one person could drive while the other sleeps.
