Default Is it the radiator?

The hose that connects to the top of the radiator and the engine, broke open the other day. I fixed it but now I notice that the hose gets real hot real quick. I dunno if its normal for it to get that hot or b-cuz the radiator fan might not be working. How can I get my radiator fan to turn on automatically to see if its broke or not engaging? Is it normal/ok to for the engine temp. gauge to be a lil less than 1/2 way up all the time? and last what is the thermostat and how much does it cost?, the mechanic said that the reason the hose busted the first time Might of been b-cuz of the thermostat. What is your engine temperature like? I guess your thermostat could be opening too soon. Thermostats are cheap (like 10 bucks) I would just throw one in and go from there.
