Default Garage, car port, driveway security (for low-theft rate areas.)

With the recent explosion of ITR thefts (or so it seems), I started thinking about getting a home security system.

I live in a pretty safe neighborhood, so I didn't want to go overboard with a full-on security system (ie ADT, Brinks and the likes). But I did want something that would give me enough warning to ready my defense gear (12 gauge) before any harm was done to the car. So searching around for a milder/cheaper setup(no monitoring fees, as they seem to be useless anyway), I ran into this:

http://www.rewci.com/gadodrmose.html

It seems like a real simple set up (the actual unit plugs in, but the senors are all battery powered--no hard wiring.) Even if you don't have a garage, it can be set up in the driveway, carports, etc.

Of course, most of you might be thinking that since I'm in a "safer" area, I could just do with a car security system, but if I can take care of the "problem" before they have a chance to damage the car, it'll definately be worth it for me(especially for $40-50)

Coupled with this in a highly visible area, I'm thinking this would work pretty well.

After I get it, I'll give a full review of install, and a mock break-in

No explosion - it's always been like that.

I have a full security system and I am happy with it. I think the ideas you have are good, however, I would forgo putting the sticker in a visible place. Its like telling nefarious individuals "I have firearms. Please come get them when I'm not home". And yes, there are people stupid enough to try. Just my .02.

You can buy these at Lowe's. They have sensors, lights that come on, and buzzer that goes in your house. I plan to get one for the hatch.

That last part was more of a joke I do keep a 12 gauge close by though...just in case.

Does it come with a siren(both inside and in the garage)? Is it wireless? How much? The system in the above link do not have lights. I think that'd be a good option to have.

Sorry to be the pessimist but, if they want it they're gonna get it.

It is wireless, besides the power wire for the lights. And it has a buzzer inside the house that plugs into an electrical outlet. They are not much, less than the kit above.

Might as well leave my keys in the ignition, then, eh?

I understand there are very "talented" thieves out there, but I really can't just sit back and make it easier for them. With the higher theft rate, our defenses should go up, not down. i.e. there was a thread about a week ago, in which someone was woken up by the garage alarm going off. He/she came out to find the window busted in. He/she said if the alarm hadn't gone off, the car would've been long gone.

Now, I'm not going drastic, as to putting in video surveillance, thermal sensor, etc. The $40 or so I'll spend will be well justified, IMO.

Nice I'll have to check that out.
