Default 2-Way Security system

Hi everyone,

I hope this topic has not been discussed and I don't get yelled at. I wanted to know if anyone has a 2-Way security system and how affective are they. I was at my dealer on Friday for repairs and this gentleman was sitting next to me showing me his pager remote that's on his TL Type S and swears by it.
I'm thinking about getting one and wanted to know which brand is better, Clifford or Autopage. Clifford claims their range is 2000 feet, when it really is 800 feet according to a shop I called. And they recommended Autopage because it has a range of 3000 feet, but cost more. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I have 1, it's a Clifford. The range i think, if the car is in open sight (nothing between the pager and the car) it works about a 1/4 mile. I wouldnt recommend it, like when your car is in a mall parking garage, and your inside, because w/ all those walls and what not.

I think its a good idea if your car is parked at your house, and your on the 2nd floor and in the back of the house, so you can hear the pager go off.

But to be honest, in my opinion, i find an alarms purpose, only to alert you, to get outside and do something.

Also invest in a kill switch, a club, and if your dead serious, a wheel boot.

Try putting this up in the audio/security thread next time.

Oh, ive only had 1 scare w/ my 2-way. One night, (i sleep w/ my bedroom window open, so if the alarm does sound, im out in a snap) I heard it go off, and it did wake me up, either im a light sleeper, or its pretty loud. Either way, it did its job.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Yeah, I should've looked carefully as to where to post this. I will post it in the audio/security section.

Thank you.

Do you know any that does? I've always had Clifford alarms and I'm happy with them. But I want to upgrade mine, so that's why I'm considering a 2-Way security system.

I have the Viper 791XV, but as stated the distance that they work doesn't seem that good. It is still good enough though to alert you if something is going on with it while you're inside your house, but as far as if it were to go off while you were in a store or mall, you wouldn't know that it went off unless you were close to the parking lot. It will work through walls depending on how close you are to the car. I would definitely recommend one though.

Thanks guys for all your advice. I will definitely get one, but haven't decided on what brand yet or model.
There's a big thread on the audio/security section that got me more confused than anything.

I have a compustar SS. And the range is great. Its rated at like 1 mile but when you compensate for buildings and stuff its not that much. But still the range of the SS is still better than any other 2 way on the market I believe. Aside from things like Lo Jack of course. The only downside is that the autostart is not always reliable.

how much are you looking to spend? i definitely think a 2 way with some sort of gun is best, but like stated before, you might want to invest in other things like the autolock and kill switches (NOT THE CLUB)

I'm willing to spend anywhere between $600-800 CDN. I heard Clifford is coming out with the AvantGuard 5.5X. This is what an article said about it.

The Science of Security: Clifford G5 introduces its new 2-Way Spread-Spectrum Dot Matrix Menu Remote with One Mile Range.

This is simply the most advanced keychain device ever made! Scroll the wheel and see a vast selection of icons (drawn on the LCD screen via Dot Matrix.) Select the icon, enlarge it and press the button to send a command or sensor adjustment to the vehicle via Spread Spectrum, with ultra-extreme range of up to a full mile!

That’s just the remote. The system CPU itself is the most advanced Clifford system Directed has ever made, with 3-point immobilization and three separate sensors: digital tilt sensor, OmniSensor and remotely adjustable proximity sensor, with BlackJax anti carjacking, Smart Self-Powered Siren, 3 auxiliary outputs and built-in relays.

The AvantGuard 5.5X is simply the state-of-the-art 2-Way vehicle security and convenience system in the world.

What do you guys think?

I have an autolock.

Yeah, I'll wait until it gets tested well. I always go to the same shop for stereo and alarm system upgrades, so I'm going to ask them if they have any idea when they'll be expecting them in. I read on the other thread that it will be out in 2 mths. So, since I'm in Canada, I guess I can expect to wait a year. haha. I'll do some probing. Because this is the second review that I read about this 2-Way system saying it's the mother of all systems!

I have the Viper, and it's decent also. Only problem so far is that sometimes the volume on my pager doesn't work, which renders the thing near useless. The upside though is that when the battery dies, or when you replace a battery, it plays a weird little song, so you can dance.
Oh, you can also pretend like you have a tiny cellphone and be a dork like me.

So, when you do your funky dance, do people stare and laugh? haha
I'm getting alot of different reviews. Someone swears CompuStar is the best. Then I hear Autopage is the best. And now Clifford is coming out with a really powerful one. Decisions, decisions........

Yeah, I think I'll do just that. The link never mentioned the release date. Someone posted on the audio/security section that it will be coming out in 2 mths. But check this link out and look at this bad boy. I'm impressed!!

Hey, does your friend have the 2WFM900Mz model or a cheaper version?
Yeah, I read and saw the video and was blown away by it! I heard it was very expensive though. According to the other thread on audio/security, it's just over $900 MRSP. I don't know if that's just for the system alone or if it includes the installation.

There is a thread in the forced induction section and a guy stated he was using a Compustar system. Because of this (and me needed to get an alarm) I started calling. I had two different places quote me $300-$400. That was for the 2WSS-A installed and out the door. Seeing as their website claims it to have a 6000 foot range compared to most which are ~1400 foot...well you figure it out haha but to me I'll take the 6000ft thank you very much.

gsrdude: You say your friend had a compustar system and that it "sucked." Why did it suck, what made him regret getting it, was it professionally installed by the dealer or by himself, which model did he have? Just give more information before saying something sucks. That way we can draw our own conclusions to whether to believe the statement or not.

the SS system has a slow reation time but does have greater distance, the 900mz is there newest and best in my eyes the SS has been around for 3-4years

I have the SS and as I stated earlier the strenth is the distance although no excatly one mile (as it claims) it does currently have the best distance. I mean when they tested these things there must have been NO buildings or obstructions around. THats why I'm kind of iffy about the clifford SS. If its anything like the compustar SS then it won't really be like a city mile that compensates for buildings and obstructions. If it does somehow reach one mile in the city then I'd shell out the extra bucks for this system.

I would hit number 1 and seriously like 8 seconds later it would unarm. And if you just keep mashing the buttons it just changes the code again and again thus delaying the unarming of the car.
