Default New exhaust..Is it true it will get louder?

What up,

I just got my exhaust put on yesterday. I have an apexi n1 muffler w/ 2.25 inch piping, also running without the res. it honestly isnt that loud at all!!!! But my boy told me that the exhaust/muffler will break in and get louder? Is this true?

thanks

I've never heard of them getting louder. Seems like the would get quieter once they start getting all that carbon buildup in there. Dunno?
Mine didn't get louder until I cut the cat off.

No, it will stay the same.

I've noticed that Apex'i mufflers are different from a lot of other manufacturers in that they are much quieter inside the car than other mufflers, but they are much much louder and raspier outside the car.

An exhaust is gonna sound different outside of a car anyways b/c your standing behind the exhaust instead of in front of where the sound comes, like when your driving. Someone explained this once in a thread about the tone and all of a car coming toward you and the difference going away but I don't remember what all was written or what not. Plus the car is insulated so its gonna muffle the sound some.

Yes, I am. And thank you.

I don't have a gas smell. I've heard of some smelling like eggs from other people but no problems with mine.

About the sound, I know my Apex'i WS2 is still getting louder. Took a month before I started noticing it, but it sounds sick IMO. Perfect mix of intake and exhaust from inside the car. Thats with an b18b1 and an old cat though.

AFAIK, the majorty of rx-7 models were like typical rotary motors - they weren't very emissions-friendly. The car shouldn't smell like gas. My bro ran a drilled cat on his civic once, smelled a bit dirty, not bad though - and not like eggs. My 67 firebird has no cats, and just smells slightly like oil/gas/soot from the back. Despite it being a convertible, the smell never got to my nose while driving.

Sounds like your rx-7 was just a steaming pile

Turbo cars run richer, and so the fumes from a non-catted exhaust will be worse because the motor is combusting more fuel.

Called the doppler effect

I have an all motor set up without the cat, and the fumes are bad. My car smells like an old lawn mower most of the time.

Your 'boy' is wrong. I've had my exhaust on for over a year, it's stayed the same.

yes... espessially 7s ran/run very rich... start up and shut off are very important on rx7s as when they are cold they run the richest...

and i have a friend that had a RSR GTII That after about 2 weeks started to scream...

I think the type of muffler may influence the way it sounds over time. I know a couple of people that had exhaust get louder on them. One was a WS exhaust and one was a cheap stock knock off. I've also experienced exhaust notes getting louder as the muffler got older. I think the muffler just wears out as time goes by.....some faster than others though.

his "boy" probably scraped something, got an exhaust leak and didn't know it. I've never heard of an exhaust getting louder after a few miles.

I have a Greddy evo 2 axel back with 2 1/4" piping from the header back. It sounded great when i got it but then i bought a dc sports header and a magnaflow high flow kat. Now it is so freaking loud and in first gear it gives me the ricey sound that most people dont like. Also before i had the magnaflow cat i didnt have any cat and my car did smell like gas from behind. The back of my car was also covered in like black carbon from unburned gas. I Still have no O2 sensors so i am still running very rich. So the more air flow you get through your exhaust the louder it will get for you. goodluck with good sounds!

Hmmmm, I wonder why it got louder over time. Maybe because it has holes in it?

That egg smell is a very plugged up cat (if your running one). It is more common with older cars that have carb's and not fuel injection. Often people with older cars come to the shop I work at with this problem. 99.9% of them have a almost complete blocked cat. If it smells like eggs and your running with no cat, I would suggest looking into fixing that .
