Default Recharging A/C question.

I have a 1997 Accord, and lately I've noticed the cold air is not coming out as cold as it used to be. Therefore, I was wondering how one goes about recharging the freon for the unit? I've seen kits in auto parts stores, but I'm not too sure what all is involved in doing said job. To be fair, I've looked in Chilton's, but so far haven't found a section that discusses this but maybe I need to look further?

Anyway, any guidance would be appreciated...

check for leaks first, otherwise putting more refrigerant in would be a waste.

I've never done it myself, but I know R-134a can be recharged rather easily. They sell kits for $35 or so with a pressure guage, the quick connect adapter, and a couple cans of refrigerant. I don't believe its that hard to do, just make sure you hold the cans upside down and follow the directions.

it is my understanding that holding the cans upside down on the low presure side can cause damage to the compressor as it cannot compress liquid refigerant. all the instructions I have read state to hold the can right side up and shake occasionally.

Where is the connection to fill it up located? Is it rather easy to get to?

I just bought a 6oz can last week of R-134a for 7 bucks at Wal Mart. The feed port is on a thin metal line with a blue cap. All you do is:

-Start Car
-A/C on max
-Shake can and push onto the nipple.

The can had to be held upside down, the instructions on the back also said to hold it upside down. AC feels great now.

But the question is, how are you feeling? just kidding.

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to do the same for my wife's Lexus. It's on the crapper too...

lol, ok yeah I saw the thread where that happened. That was a retarded comment to make on his part. I thought the fence looked good. Orientalish look to it. I still don't think you have to stoop to his level though. But to each his own.

Thank you for the kind compliment.

Normally I am the type of guy to refrain to stooping to a level as low as his , but I don’t consider him to be worthy to be classified as human so it makes it a little harder philosophy to follow.

Your more than welcome. What it like to drive a POS with a busted A/C system...

If you are asking those questions, you should not be "fixing" your A/c.

The kit you get at local stores only has low pressure guage. You can not see how the A/C system is working but just the low side. High side will show you what the compressor is pumping (or not pumping).

Also, You have a leak. Your A/C system is a self-contained system. If you have to add, your system is leaking.

Although you provide a very informative post, you must realize that the thread starter has the mechanical abilities of a Lego Man.
