Default tranny died

My transmission died today in my 1996 Honda Civic EX and i cant decide on whether or not to pay my local junkyard 850 for a used one installed or just sell the car for what i owe on it 4600. Ive got about 6k worth of stuff on it and no time to part out or anything. What do you guys think?

wow I didn't know it was that much for that tranny try looking around a lil more if you can for a cheaper one. 6k + into car already /4600 left on car/ 850 maybe less to keep it mobile. You're already towards the end if you can't part out you'll lose way to much. what type of tranny you want the oem one or something different was that an auto or a manual/swap to a manual? (trying to also put some tech in it so your thread won't die also )

I'd get a new tranny. Is it a manual or an automatic? If it's a manual, you can find a tranny for it for atmost $150 bucks plus installation. I'd keep it cuz you're not going to get your $6k out of it...

its a 5 speed ex no swap i just want the same thing i guess. Aamco wanted 1500-2500 to just fix it but that was crazy. So i guess heres my tech question. What is the likely hood of me being able to swap a dead tranny for a good one? Same model same everything. I am about a 6 maybe a 7 on the 1=crappy and 10=awesome mechanic scale. If its as simple as unplug unbolt and plug in and bolt up then i can most likely get er done. What do you guys think?

I believe by your rating system you should be able to do it with the help of a friend or two, a manual and a lil bit of searching. That's a popular tranny so someone should have a write up or posted one thing or another about installing that tranny. I don't know why they want to charge that much you should be able to cut that in half maybe more.

I just got the opportunity at a transmission off a 99 civic ex with 30k miles. It came from a swap and has lsd intstalled. The guy wants $300 for it and i plan on installation by myself. Good deal?

What kind of LSD does it have in it? If it's a reputable LSD then $300 is an awesome deal. You can't expect to get a non-LSD Y8 tranny for much less than $150...

For 300 bills, I'd wager a Phantom Grip LSD is installed.

As for installation - just get a Helms. My pops and I did the tranny in my 99 hatch in about 5 hours.

An impact gun really makes things easy to.

5 hours included cracking open the tranny to replace the ISB and mainshaft bearing.
