Default WERA weekend at Summit Pt.

Some friends and I headed down to Summit this past weekend to help out a friend's father who races. It was his first race of the year and the two races he finishes, he got a 1st and a 2nd.
Saturday night it went below freezing and the sunburn I got during the day made me freeze my *** off all night. The bike is an '89 Yamaha fzr-400, which runs in D-superbike, Formula 2, and V-6, incase anyone is interested.

Pictures are worth a thousand words:

something you cross your fingers you won't see, two sv650s got tangled exiting the carousel.

this is what happens when you put a full can of soda in a bonfire

my car waiting for it's turn on the track

See you all at the track this summer. (NASA, SCCA, WERA) stop by and say hi.

That's awesome. I'll be at JC next weekend at the NESBA event there. Seeing that doesn't make me think a second thought about racing a '93 CBR600 in WERA someday.

Nice pics. If you haven't already, throw those up in the Motorcycle forum. They'll love it.

P.S. I dig you color scheme on the wheels.

the novice 600ss class in WERA is probably the biggest one there. Maybe your bike would be eligible for vintage, I am not sure. . .

Yea, about the safety, they are super good about that. Between them and the MARRC corner workers they had there, there was no worries.

Are you spectating or riding? If spectating how are you getting there? I was thinking of riding out there to take some pics for a few hours but don't really wanna go it alone.

Well that's kind of what I meant. It might of come off as sounding weird. What I meant was I was a little intimidated taking a twelve year old bike out and competing in the 600SS novice class, but after seeing that amount of people in that class and what most run, as well as your friend there, I no longer have any doubts at all and can't wait to eventually dabble with some novice class racing.

ah I see, I see. The guy riding in the pics is my friend's dad. He's an expert that has been racing for 20 years or something like that. His bike is an fzr400, with a built engine. He races in a few classes, some of the other bieks he races are honda firehawks, honda/yamaha/aprillia 125/250's, destroked sv650's, etc.

as far as I know, one of them walked himself into the ambulance. The other one had to be medivaced to DC or wherever they go, but I think he ended up being OK too.

Do they finally have air barriers at Summit Point (for all the bike races, and not just the few big ones)? Riding with trees that close just seems insane without them.

not quite sure what you mean by air barriers, but I didnt notice anything different along the front straight or between 9 and 10. I did hear that they cleared out some stuff outside of one of the turns to make more runoff.

Some of the motorcycle sanctioning groups use inflatable walls in key places to catch riders as the slide towards less forgiving tire walls or trees. Turn 3 at SP comes to mind as a place that could use one. Turn 4 used to be bad, but is better now that they cleared it out a bit.

Edit: I've seen one of the bike clubs run Jefferson with no additional impact-absorbing material (at least not on portions visible from the main course). Totally nuts.

yea, they didn't have them. I have not seen them at VIR or Summit, and AFAIK they don't run them anywhere else.

There was quite a few crashes at T3 that weekend, but I don't think anyone actually hit a barrier at all. . .
