How soon after rebuild do you guys switch to synthetic?
Don't listen to dave, he'd put beer in his car if he could. I ran gtx till 9,000 and then switch. However, I did spin a rod bearing at 10,500 so who knows.
never. castrol gt-x all the way.
Of course, I change my oil every 2k miles. But any performance minded
person should change at about that frequency
GTX is just what I've always used and its never done me wrong.
I may have first bought it because it was the cheapest, but it works.

I have ~42k on my car. HARD miles, lots and lots and lots of road course hours, etc. Barely burns a bit, car puts down 169/122 (b18c1 with intake, header, ghetto exhaust and vafc, nothing else), etc. I love GTX. It's never done me wrong and I never plan on using synth oil again (except in my conquest.. but I may even switch that..)
Thats pretty surprising...
I would have figured alot of people used synthetic
Hell, regular oil is so cheap...might as well use that and just cahnge it more often.

Mobil 1. Better flow characteristics when cold. Better protection against thermal breakdown when hot.
Castrol GTX
A few years ago I went with Mobil 1 and the car started burning oil at a higher rate, 4-5 months passed I changed back to Castrol and the oil burning decreased to normal levels.
PS I change my Oil about every 2500 miles or so

Isn't there a problem with switching back to conventional motor oils after using synthetic?? I've heard this before but I'm not sure if its true
And the proof is... where?

A sample from the above link:
Brand VI Flash Pour %ash %zinc
10W-30
Castrol GTX 140 415 -33 .85 .12
Mobil 1 160 450 -65 --- ---
All indicators point to M1....IMO. You may see it differently.
Every year my students (I'm a teacher) have to do a researched-based science paper where they have to design an experiment, test it and base conclusions from it. Last year a student of mine tested the flow characteristics and thermal breakdown of several motor oils, including mobil 1. I can't recall exact numbers but somewhere north of 280 degrees F all of the organics caught fire and turned into sludge. The only oil that did not was Mobil 1 and it caught fire north of 400 F. He put the fire out and poured it into a can where it retained some viscosity.
Additionally, I have about 70k on a motor that I too beat up regularly and it does't burn a drop of Mobil 1. Sure it's more expensive but I figure a little more protection can't hurt.
just my .02

Well, i don't know if this helps anyone, but if your motor has an "incident", running mobil one @ $5 quart isn't going to save you. I used mobil one since day one once my motor was broken in and it still spun a rod bearing. as much as i care about my car, i must admit that i did avoid changing my oil at 3000 miles sometimes because mobil one is so expensive. from now on im going to use conventional oil and change it @ 2000 miles.
I definately don't blame the oil. what I'm saying is that when something catastrophic happens, running synthetic isn't going to help you.

Well....put a quart of each in the freezer for a good while, then pour. Then put equal amts into test tubes and put a burner flame underneath. Figure what you want in your engine from that.

i usually use mobil 1 and have used castrol semi-synthetic when i am cheap and i have never had any burning oil problems.....i'm surprised some here dont use synthetic, maybe i should try out this castrol gtx too
that's what i use on my beater
