What class are you running in?
Do you want the tires to be "track only" or do you want to be able to drive them on the street too?

I am probably gonna go with some sort of 15'' rotas because there light and cheap, and kumho victoracers whenever I can. Steelies would be heavy which you probably wanna stay away from.
If your on a budget Falken Azenis are the ****! They are cheap and relitively sticky for the cash. I'd invest in a set of those, and a set of 15" rota's.

if it's his first autocross, he doesn't need race rubber for the next one. Drive for a year on street rubber and learn your car. Best thing you can do is to keep the tires you have now and learn on them. You'll become a better driver and when you finally do get better tires, it'll make a much bigger difference than buying tires now. Keep your tires or get some other street tires (Yokohama AVS ES-100).

For AUTO-X it depends on what class?
There's a lot to look into.
R compound allowed?
Street tires only?
What is the treadwear rating minimum?
Size limitations?
Find out then ask again. Other wise you'll get a buncha newbs recommending a this and that when they don't even apply to you.
Then again, this IS H-T....

I'd use street tires. Much better for learning. However, admittedly all-seasons can be a bit frustrating. If you want a better tire, I'd look into a set of Hankook Ventus RS2 Z212s (cheaper and more available than the Falken 615s right now). Wait until you can afford a full set though.
