Default Thinking of switching my J's for an Icebox

I was thinking of buying a Comptech Icebox(just the box, not the arm) and switching out my J's. The J's has great throttle response but it sucks in hot air. I don't like how it fits in the engine bay(rubs my spark plug wires) I was going to build a heat shield for it but I thought of this route instead.

I've read some good reviews of the Icebox. Smooth, linear gains thoughout the rpm range. A CAI with the OEM'ish' look.

Looking for some comments from anyone who has run the Icebox.

Am I going backwards? Is my thinking far off?

Comments welcome

Your not really going foward or backward depending on the mods you have.

It seems like you have already made up your mind so go for it.

I have the the Comptech intake & icebox on the R and it's great. Throttle response is better than stock and my butt dyno says that I got a nice little increase in power throughout the entire power band, and it sounds good. I've never had the J's so I can't compare the two but imo you can't go wrong with Comptech .

He's totally right. IMHO Mugen is the best choice.

Would be nice to find a used one for a good price but the Icebox is $175 brand new.

Has anyone actually had both the J's and the Icebox?

Hey Chris,

how's your car doing? you should organize a meet for all us Vancouver ITR drivers

I have a Comptech Icebox...I like it a lot (but I couldn't compare cuz I've never used J's before). Have you considered the Injen CAI before? It should be quite good as well.

Regardless, I think that switching to Comptech is a pretty good idea. The throttle response is still pretty good (relative to the AEM CAI).

Car is doing great. Didn't drive too much in the winter. Glad the warm weather is starting to happen.

That would be great. Perhaps June, after Expo. Still can't believe I'm going.

Haven't heard too much about the Injen. Found a good deal on an Icebox so I think I'll try it out. Thanx for your review.

We should definately get an ITR cruise going for June, maybe even earlier.

Chris....
Stop playing games with yourself and replace that intake with an... *intercooler

Aloha,
Brandon

*plus all the relative parts that make an intercooler useful, like the turbo for example.

Oh! Like one of those "front mount" air intakes?

We have a spare, used Comptech Icebox with two foam filters.

Contact Corey (the moderator Honda318dx) to buy and ship if you want it.

In my opinion, going to an Icebox over a J's is a slight step backwards as far as overall power gain and driveability.

If the OP didn't already have the J's, I'd certainly counsel the Icebox as a well proved, relatively inexpensive intake. Personally, I'd want an Icebox instead of an AEM, but I wouldn't want an Icebox instead of a J's.

The Icebox intake is usually positioned behind the starboard turn signal, so you can remove the turn signal housing and get some cold air in there if you're on the track.

The Mugen intake is positioned inside the fender well so that you get cooler air, but not ram air, and in an effort to reduce the chance of immersion. IMHO both the Icebox and Mugen are fairly safe from immersion.

The Icebox airbox is bigger, and houses a larger foam filter. The Mugen airbox is smaller and houses a very free flowing air filter. The Mugen intake extension that drops down out of the airbox, however, is huge compared to other intakes.

I've heard people argue that it's worth losing 3 HP in order to get the supposedly better filtration of the cleanable Icebox filter. I'm not sure about that.

Either one's a decent choice, IMHO, although the expense of the Mugen intake might be better left to the ending stages of your ITR's development if you're at all strapped. Even the Mugen intake won't change your ITR into a torque monster.

the turn signal removal..i always wondered if that actually helped...

you figure the motor going at 7000+ rpms must be sucking in a lot of air...faster than it could be rammed through that turn signal slot.

In other dyno tests, the AEM lost HP compared to the J's Racing intake.

Could you please give us some specifics about your ITR? What modifications and tuning, what kind of dyno, and weather differences between dynos?

Thanx George and everyone else for your input.

Gonna make a trip to Home Depot tomorrow and look at getting some material for a heat shield. I've seen some nice ones here on H-T for the J's.

I guess my thought process around the Icebox was an OEM look and a cold air design. I dislike how the J's rubs the spark plug wires and fills up that section of the engine bay. And, of course, the heat soak. As minor as it might be.

Brandon, after riding in Dr. Poo's R the turbo bug was undeniable. Unfornately, buying a camcorder for Expo, ICBC looking for $1400 from me for tix and fines and premiums as well as just buying a townhouse and having to furnish it; the turbo just isn't at the top of the list. I'm sure after riding with you I'll find a way to make it happen

The motor was pretty stock except for bolt on and cams, sure you can get all your answers here.... https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1194128

I used to use an AEM cold air but know i run the icebox. i chose to use a 6.5"w/3" ID velocity stack instead of the filterit comes with. it sits nice and snug inside of the box... low end and throttle response was graetly inprove the vtec engagemant flatspot i had with the aem is now gone and to top it of it rips with a velocity stack on the top end. i do recomend getting some sort of duct to help the icbox get the ram air it was designrd to get...the only thing i did not lik about the icebox/intake combo was the ghey crome finish it cam in so i painted it black i will take some piocs for you with the top of the box
