kidding, yes you gain power. the cat is restrictive bc it helps your car pollute less.
a better idea would be to buy a high flow or fake cat, and bolt the real one back on for inspections.

i wouldnt take your good working cat and gut it. only if it was already cracked and rattling broken pieces inside. because youre better off with a straight pipe.
having ran my car with a gutted cat, i couldnt tell you there was much of a difference. but i wouldnt say my car sounded like crap at all. ive installed it in 2 different engines and configurations and never complained about the sound. actually, i had to put it back on to run my new exhaust, and it doesnt make my exhaust sound bad at all. and the car still recently dynoed at 107whp, everything else stock including air intake and exhaust manifold. my current d16a6 engine is 200k miles old.
the smell does annoy me i must admit.
